Default Considering Buying 65 396/425 or 66 427/425 Conv!!!!

I am considering buying a 1965 L78 396-425hp or 1966 L72 427-425Hp Corvette Convertible. Must be an original numbers matching big block car not a fake perfer cars with documentation but will consider others if they are good cars. Would love to find a car that needs restored but is complete but will consider all condition. No white cars though. So Send me an email to matthew_lamer@hotmail.com.

Good luck with 85k. Original motor, 396, restored verts are selling for less. One example: http://www.mecum.com/auctions/lot_de...D=BG0610-94874 No sale at 77K in June, sold for 67.5K in Aug, 2010. 17 miles after frame off resto. Of course, auction description is only "documentation" to go by.

I would love to get a look at that car. I am always skeptical when they say #s matching. Plus with no judging history, the car may have other issues like a bogus trim tag, incorrect parts, poor body work etc. It does look nice and if it has no issues, then the buyer got a heck of a good buy.

Mine is worth $85k: it is a genuine 396 car w sidepipes from the factory. Only 759 cars had sidepipes that year. 759/23500 = approx 3%. Combine that w the 396 convert rarity (approx 4%) and only maybe a handful are like this one.

It will be all restored to "as delivered from the factory appearance", except the (bolt in) engine which will be a nice temporary driver roller cam, alum head, run on today's pump gas, w warranty and 440 hp powered car. It has the orig trans available and will have a (bolt-in) 5-speed Tremec TKO 600 installed for ease of driving. The Marooon/Maroon color combo was a 1965 offering only adding the extreme rarity of this Corvette.

Combine that with a premium paint prep and deluxe basecoat/clearcoat in the original color...along with all-fresh chrome and SS, it will be a stunning collector's car.

And driveable, to boot!!

PS: The value has nothing to do w cost.

How can you tell if it was a factory side pipe car ? No tank sticker, rear panel bolts on. You bought the car 45 years old. How many times did it change hands ? How many reported the title change ( flippers ) ? How do you know it started life as a big block car ? Those dashes are held in by several screws.
If I were buying a high buck car some serious documentation would have to be available. I have even viewed phoney documentation.
Don't get me wrong... its a beautiful car with nice paint and options. The select few that buy this catagory usually have experts and legal advice close by.

Good point..... they don't ... Now you get it ?
The rear panel that contains the exhaust pipe bezels. Side exhaust cars don't have the holes for exhaust. The panels can be changed... or you can mud in the holes kinda like if you have too many tail lamps.

My 396 sipepipe car has the original rear valance w/out holes or any fill in.

Plus the sides of the frame don't have cut off brackets for the deeper rockers firmly attached on rear exhaust cars.

There should be notches in the birdcage as it runs along the sidepipes. The splash shields will not have staples or staple holes for the rubber cushing. The center cross member grounding strap holes should not be threaded. At the frame ends in the lt and rt wheel wells should be triangle shape fiberglass. I've included pictures.

Bill D,

Thanks for the additional input.
We went through the Correct ID in July before the Sting Ray was purchased.
There was nothing hidden from discussion and no secret parts added or subreacted.
It is what it is.

It is now in paint 800 miles away so additional detail shots are a bit hard to get.

Here is an image of the rear valance at the paint shop:
note sanded down to orig plastic, orig paint, and no fill.

So these "triangular" fiberglass sections were only on side pipe cars? I never knew that! Thanks for pointing it out.
