The "standard" pan (4 qt +1 for the filter) and the "long" pan ( 5 qt. +1 for the filter) were the same maximum depth at the rear.

as for the L79, while there is a school of thought that it may have first been equipped with the "6 qt" pan (holds 5 qts) that the L76 got, for the most part and as far as most any L79 is concerned, they were delivered witht he "5 qt" pan (holds 4 qts) familar to most SBs (L79 being available with PS, which interefered with the big pan.)
They did not use the 6 qt pan if the L79 was ordered without PS, and the 5 qt pan if it was ordered with PS (aside from the really early car issue I mentioned above)

I measured the oil pan that came off my 327/350 hp L79. The sump is 7" deep and about 11" long. ......BUT, I am not positive this is the origanal pan because my car did not originally have power steering, yet this pan clears the ram on the power steering that I have now installed.
But then again, it is possible the car came with power steering, something broke, Bubba was too cheap to fix it, and took it off. Anything is possible. I took some pictures of the pan, so if I can figure out how to post them, I will do so. I do know how to e-mail them, so this is an option.
