I use 10W30 non synthetic. Run it for 100 miles, chg. oil & filter, then 900 more and do it again. I've never had any problems doing this. Just my $0.02 worth.

Don't forget to run the oil pump for five minutes before firing up the engine for the first time or after a long time. Got this from Summit. PT

Thanks-i have an oil pump primer, but i had no idea you were suppose to run it for 5 minutes. I usually just run them for about a minute or 2 . that usually seems to be enough to soak the valves, but perhaps i should run it for longer

Time is not so much a factor as is getting oil all the way up to the top of the engine so that there is oil coming out of the pushrods.

The shop that helped me pull my motor has a pressurized can, with oil, and the fittings to hook up to the oil pressure gauge fitting, or the fitting on the front by the timing cover. The mechanic there says he can run the charge while cranking.

Oil pump primers work also.

...or any other API CI-4 HD diesel engine oil like Chevron Delo or Mobil Delvac, and it's also a very good idea to add a can of GM EOS to increase the concentration of ZDDP anti-wear additive.

Change the filter after cam breakin or about 30-60 minutes of engine operation. Assembly lubes can clog the oil filter, so it should be changed, but DO NOT CHANGE THE OIL. Keep the high ZDDP concentration there for the full breakin period, which should be about 1000-1500 miles.

Continue to use CI-4 oil for the life of the engine and change it and the filter every 5000 miles or one year, WHICHEVER OCCURS FIRST.

I too wondered about the oil getting up through the push rods and ran the oil pump primer tool for a good 5 minutes, or more. It just seemed right to do that.
Just recently fired up my fresh engine rebuild using Delo 15-40 with a bottle (used to be a can) of EOS thrown in for good measure.
Now that the front mechanicals are done - onward rear! .. Everything is pulled, except the pumpkin. Seems I get the 'hunchback of Notre Dame' effect after coming out from working underneath the car! .. Age .? .. ..
