Default Help With Timing For Dual Point Dist

Anyone out there running a Delco dual-point dist with no vacuum advance from a C1 who can enlighten me on the timing curve? I would love to know such things as initial timing and total timing at a certain rpm.

Thanks in advance,

Peter

really depends on the engine, so the follwing should be applied judiciously.

(static advance is always set with the vac advance plugged anyway, so that is not an issue).

Figure 8-12 crankshaft degrees initial advance, with full advance of 36-38 at around 2800 RPM for a medium performance engine.

Why no vac advance? The only things thise distribs are meant for is WOT racing, and it kills your gas mileage w/o vac advance.

There's a chart in the back of the ST-12 that shows all the C1 distributor applications by number, and the centrifugal advance curve characteristics for each one; double the numbers to get crankshaft rpm and degrees, as the chart numbers are in DISTRIBUTOR rpm and degrees.

'62 340 HP engines and F.I. (I think) came with the dual point, no vac distributors. No problem with them. In fact it's the one item I've had the least trouble with for the 34 years I've owned the '62

The 62 dual point distributor came with two windows caps to set the points. I know on older dual points C1 distributors you adjust one set of points with the other set isolated then isolate the 1st set and adjust the 2nd. I wondered what sequence one would use to adjust the 62 points with an external wrench?

ST-12 is THE manual for C1 Vettes. Not complete, but close. Available from the NCRS here:

http://www.ncrs.org/store/shop.cgi/p...143068298.9469

Or at most Vette parts suppliers.

Also recommend getting the applicable Chevy full size Passenger car shop manuals for your year Vette, since the ST-12 is not complete, and some items are only found in the Passenger car shop manual (example: ST-12 only covers the 56 rear end which is different than the later C1 rears, and some electrical items are only found in the Passenger car shop manual - among other issues). The Passenger car shop manuals are also listed at the above site just below the ST-12 listing.

Note also that for some years, you need the previous year's Passenger Car Shop Manual, and then the correct year Passenger Car Supplement.

Example: For a 59 or 60 Vette, you need the 58 Manual, and then the 59/60 Supplement.

When I ran the dual points I would set it on a distributor machine. I now only run one set of points in it - I'm too old to notice much difference!
