Default What creeper?

Last week I inquired about a floor jack and jackstands. Barry K, Grey Ghost, Ctjacker and others gave great advice which I followed. Now on to today's dilemma:

I cannot now, nor could I ever have been accurately described as "petite". So performance is an issue when it comes to rolling with ease. I want to get a creeper so that I can get under my car now that I can safely jack it up and put it on jackstands.

Any suggestions on a good creeper that rolls easily while carrying a bit of "beef"? I am 6'2" and 250ish and would like to get it done the first time as opposed to my usual act of buying two or three until I get it right and then leaving the ones that didn't work out in the corner as a monument. It is raining in Chicago today. The Warden doesn't have any immediate plans for my day, so I am in the mood to pick a creeper up and work on my speedo problem.

Thanks, Joe

I am about the same size as you. With advice from forum members I tried the "Bonester" creeper and like it.

Amazon.com, $69.95.

I've bought a couple creepers and none of them work like I think they should. I'm not a big guy and when I'm on a creeper no matter how high I put the car on jackstands I feel I have no room to work. I've found that a 20 dollar ARMY/NAVY style wool blanket works great. Dave

The dogbone is the best creeper I've used. However old cardboard works nice too, and you can slide around on it.

I bought a package of 2'x2' lock together foam rubber squares. They are only about 1" thick but insulate from cold, hot and irregular surfaces. Got them from Pep Boys for about 15 bucks.

I guess everybody's entitled to their own opinion. I ran a garage for 25 years and prefer the standard HD steel style creeper. I absolutely despise the "Bone" style creepers as I have a hell of a tough time getting off of them- I actually have to roll off the creeper onto the floor before getting up. I am also 6'5", 280lbs- not petite in anybody's book!

Good Luck!

big old flattened box (the sort that Kitchen cabinets, or furniture from Pottery Barn comes in ) underneath the car - easy to slide around on - catches all manner of spills and drips and then is disposed of.

Bubba, signing off for today . . .

Sorry to come in on the thread a little late, but....

Go to the nearest Home Depot (or equivalent) and get a 4 x 8 piece
of 1/2 inch thick rigid, closed-cell (foam) insulation.

Cut it in half so you've got two pieces about 4 x 4.

They are light, easy to move and position and cover a decent area.
They have slick sides that are easy to slide on, yet stay where you put them.
They are only 1/2 inch thick: hard to get much lower than that!
They are soft and easy on the knees, elbows, back and head.
They insulate well (cold or hot).
They can catch small amounts of fluid without absorbing them.
They can be cleaned easily: usually just wiped off.
They catch falling parts and keep them from bouncing & rolling off to Pluto.
They are cheap! If something happens to one, go get another one.

I have a nice Craftsman creeper and can't remember the last time I
used it after 'discovering' the above.

PS. This is my one claim to fame as a mechanic/inventor/bubba!

Good luck!

Be very careful when using those. Any type of spark or flame will set those off and they will burn up very fast. You can put what's left of a 4'x'8 sheet in your hand once it has burned down. Basically all air.

Im 5-9 and 185 I have had some back and leg issues so I need something I cam move around easy with. The constant moving around adjusting position kills me and Im sore for days. Anyone have similar issues who has used one that doesn't suck?

After 8 1/2 years, let's not resurrect an old thread about creepers. a new one could work.
