Default Cure for 1963 Shifter Rattle?

I have a significant shifter rattle at 60 MPH and above. I would like to keep the original factory shifter rather than replace it with Hurst or other shifter. Any fixes for this problem? Any rebuild kits available? Since the reverse lock-out doesn't seem to work, can I put something inside the outside shaft to reduce/eliminate the problem?

Thanks in advance.

I'm not sure there IS a cure, but at least you can make certain that the shifter is in as good condition as it can get. Dr Rebuild (203-366-1332) and other vendors sell an anti-rattle spring and bracket (about $12) that can help. Also, make sure the shift rods have the wire "R" clips on then.

My wife to be would stuff a wadded Kleenex in the boot by 4th gear in our '63 4-spd roadster when we were cruising on the highway. Worked great!

I was able to cut down the rattle quite a bit by stuffing a rag down there. Nice to know that Bubba fixes are allowed on the forum from time to time.

Rubyred,
I had the same problem with mine, the problem is in the reverse lockout.
You have to remove the chrome cover and replace the spring that hold the "T" lever down. The spring can be purchased at a local hardware store, it's a lot of work but a cheap fix and it works. I did mine about two (2) years ago and it's still quiet. :chevy

There is a GM rebuild kit for the shifter. I applied it to 2 GM shifters for my 66 AND I replaced the reversed lockout handles And I replaces the springs AND I added O rings to the reverse lockout bar THEN a rubber tube instead.... but they still rattled. I sold one and bagged one and bought a Hurst. No more rattle.
