283 blocks.. which years accept 327 crank?
I was considering stroking a 283 with a 327 crank... I have read that some of the earlier blocks will not accept the 327 (3.25 small journal)
crank... the counterweights contact the block and any attempt to
clearance the block causes a water strike....
I have also heard that later sixties 283 blocks WILL accept the
327 crank... that they are factory clearanced..
The 327 came in 62... I was just guessing that this might be the year for the 283 block change... to make things uniform assembly line wise..
... anyway, if someone has DEFINITIVE information on the year or years
and/or casting numbers for the blocks that accept the 327 crank..
I'd like to have that info....
Even if the only blocks that can be stroked are non Corvette blocks..
thanks, K

307 was large journal.... .040 over and 3.25 stroke in 283 block should
yield about 313 cubic inches...
I want to take advantage of steel (forged) crank in 327 as I might
fit engine with nitrous.... believe 307 was cast..
I also already have all accesory brackets for 283 block.. including
A/C... and I live in Texas..gotta have it...
Formula for determining Cubic Inches
bore x bore x stroke x .7854 x number of cylinders = cubic inches
283 and most 327 are small journal crankshafts..
anyway... still looking for info on factory cylinder relief of 283 block... what years??.. numbers??
yield about 313 cubic inches...

All the 307s I've come accross were 2 bbl turds in plain jane pass cars (i.e. your gramma's 4 dr Malibu). Not much point in going down in displacement from 327.
Only valid reason to increase displacement of a 283 is to build a 301. JM .02

Hello:
I saw your post and don't honestly know what year 283s will accept a 327 crank. I have a '60 Vette and my dad has a '61. Neither had the original motors, but the 283 in my car is a 1963 casting date from either an Impalla or a Chevelle so I was told. I replaced my engine with a 350 crate engine, but before that, the 283 was rebuilt several years ago with Dart heads. The cylinders have not been honed and should be the original size. The engine will have to be rebuilt because the rubber valve seats got a little hot and were leaking oil.
If my year 283 will work I will sell it to you cheap -- just want to sell it to someone who could use it. I can have it shipped via freight if you are interested. How's that? My dad wants it out of his garage so he can move on to the next project.
Good luck with your search and let me know if you are interested. My number here is (312) 263-4152.
I will look for the casting numbers in the meantime.

I don't recall the casting numbers involved, but the blocks used for both 283 and 327 cranks saw the casting change in 1962; the bottom edge of the cylinders were straight across previous to '62, and that area was cast/ground in an arc from '62-up when the block was also to be used with a 327 crank.
