Default SIze of wheels & tires for 64

I have a stock 64 and would like to put 17" wheels on it. How large can I go before jeopardizing the body. A tire store said I can go 17"X8" with 4 " offset and 235/40/17. Any experience out there?

You can fit a '67 6" Rally wheel (+0.06" offset) and a 215/70R-15. Anything wider
than this regardless of wheel diameter is probably going to require fender surgery.

205 x 65 R 15" will fit fine on any 63 to 67 Vette stock rims with no rubbing. I have had this size tire on my 66 , for 4 years with absolutely no problem.

The trouble with a 205/65 is that it is significantly less in OD and has a higher revs
per mile figure that any of the OEM tires. A 205/75 or 215/70 is in the ballpark and
will keep the speedo within OEM/DOT accuracy. A 225/70 is okay too, but needs more
than a six inch wheel,l and on a 7" it is too wide to clear the fender lips on a C2.

In my experience, picking non-stock wheels and tires can require a little research. For example, not all tires of a given size (e.g., 215 70R 15) have identical dimensions in critical areas such as section width. This dimension can also vary according to the size wheel the tire is mounted on. One good web site to compare tire sizes is: http://www.tirerack.com/tires/SearchTires.jsp . There you can enter a given tire size and see the dimensions of a large variety of tires.

When I had the body off my 63 Coupe, I determined the largest section width I could handle was 8.1 inches. I ended up buying 16" x 7" wheels.

For a given size, tire dimensions must meet The Tire and Rim Association specifications,
which covers an range of about five percent, so all tires of a given size will be pretty
close.

Spec charts usually give the "measuring" rim width, which is the width of the wheel
the tire was installed on and inflated to make the measurements.

As a very good rule of thumb, section width increases/decreases by forty percent
of the change in wheel width for older high profile tires, so if a 215/70 has a specified section
width of 8.2 inches on a six inch wheel, the section width will widen to about 8.6 inches on a seven inch
wheel. There is no significant change in other dimensions if the tire is mounted on a
wheel that is within the specified range of recommended widths.
