Wheel Lug Stud Bolt Holes
I took the wheels from my '56 at the local tire shop today to get them balanced. The shop balanced them OK but told me that on each wheels the five holes for the lug studs were too large and this creates a safety issue!!
I measured the holes and they're about .608 to .610 for a 7/16 stud. This is quite a difference but at $100.00 each for reproduction wheels I have to be convinced first that they’re really needed.
Anybody on this forum ran into this dilemma before?
Thanks.. Pierre

I had this problem (issue?) with a set of old Magnum 500 wheels on my 67 GTX. All the lug bolt holes were enlarged about 1/8 to 3/16 inch larger than the bolts. I think they were actually Ford wheels and at one time I wondered if Ford used 1/2 ior 9/16 nch studs - but then realized that was silly. I read somewhere it's not an uncommon problem for normal mounting/dismounting to slowly enlarge the bolt holes on steel wheels. I replaced them - don't know how hazardous it is. As long as the lug nuts have enough seat to stay tight and your not autocrossing, it probably is not a major hazard.
