Why Do Some 1962 Corvettes Have Gold Grills
Was It From Some Special Option

The debate on this question has raged for many years, and I don't know if it has ever been "settled". One of the more credible theories was that Chevrolet planned to feature the 1962 Corvette as their "50th Anniversary" car, and had 50 grilles anodized gold (instead of black) and sent to St. Louis in preparation for the build of fifty "50th Anniversary Special" Corvettes. Subsequently they changed their mind to feature a different car line instead, and St. Louis used the gold-anodized grilles they had in inventory at random during the 1962 model year. I have no idea if this is the "real" story or not.

Default Gold grill

I read the same type of story. My 62 (Oct. 61 production) has a gold grill and, while I have no documentation to prove it, I believe it to be original.

I have seen one 62 as described at the Detroit Autorama a few years ago. I also believe JohnZ`s statement is the creditable story as I recall the same information. And 1962 Black grills have been obsolete for decades.

37128 Pimp my ride.

OK
I think with a few BFH`s we could accomidate. How about a nice silver 61 grill {no 62`s left} hammered {but gently} in to the front of that L72 right between the bumpers. And a nice set of 24`s on all four corners would fix you right up.

Default Here's mine

So here's what a gold grill looks like installed. I can't say if it is original to my car but believe it to be. It was definitely in the car when the previous owner bought the car in the early 70's.

Yeah, about 6 years ago when that photo was taken. I was folding my 6'2" frame into my car. Lots of legs, not much room between the steering wheel and the seat.

The picture was taken in my back yard. I have a 24x24 climate controlled shop in my back yard where I work on my car projects.
