Default Is 212 degrees the correct engine temp?

I checked the engine temp with my new ray gun. It reads 212 at the intake manifold and water pump. 160 approx at radiator. Is this correct temp for my small block motor? Has a 180 thermostat.

I think you want to be at 180 Ken.

The correct place to "shoot" is the upper radiator hose forward of the thermostat housing. It's supposed to be 180 there and I wouldn't be surprised if it is.

A 180 degree themostat opens to allow flow at 180 degrees. That all. Engine temps can and do climb higher. 212 isn't unrealistic for a stopped car. I wouldn't worry about this much unless it rises while driving.

Compare the IR reading to your gauge and baseline the temp delta for future reference.

The gun and gauge read the same temp. So the gauge is correct. Radiator temp was much cooler as expected. Engine was turned off at the time for about 3 minutes. But the temp gauge while driving was the same (212) as it was for those 3 minutes after turning the motor off.
