Default 1966 Tire Fitment

I just purchased a set of the Bolt-on Knock-off wheels from Dick Barron at Virgina Vettes. I need to buy some new tires to go on these wheels. I have a numbers matching L79 coupe with 73,000 miles in survivor condition. I plan on keeping it the car as close to stock as possible. Any additions/upgrades that I do I want to insure can easily be returned to stock such as removing these reproductions wheels and putting back on the original wheels and hubcaps should I ever want to enter the car at an NCRS meet.

Replacement radial tires for this car are either the P205/75R15 or the 215/70R15. There is a much greater choice of tires if I go with the 215/70R15's, but I want to insure that I don't have any fender interference problems if I go with the 70 series tires rather than the 75 series. The original tires were a 775-15 which is a equivalent to a F78/15 bias belt.

Anyway, does anyone have any experienece with fitting either the 70 or the 75 series tires? Anyone have any suggestions as to what size and tire brand to consider?

Regards,

george, I also have a 66 coupe under resto. that I just ordered knock-offs for and was going to ask same question soon. Have you thought about putting goldwall or whitewall tires on it? Have not started looking, but I think I am going with goldwall tires. anyway, to the top as I am waiting to hear replies too. James

I have the same set up - 66 L79 with bolt on knockoff's - I have BF Goodrich 215/70/15 whitewalls and the tires fit good, look good and no rubbing anywhere. I had 205/75/15 on it before and I like this look better. If you give me your e-mail, I will send you a couple of photos.

I got a set of P205/75 R15 Coker Classic Goldline tires mounted to Corvette America Direct bolt Knockoffs this fall mounted on my 1966 Mosport Green 327/350hp convertible. Look great, work great. No problems at all.

Cokers look good but do not last in the hot weather - if you live in Arizona or Texas (like gedupont does), they will come apart - I have had 2 different midyears with brand new coker goldlines - both had issues with tires seperating in the heat. Just my experience! Good luck!

DANG! I was hoping to move to AZ someday but now I will have to stay in SD until I wear out those tires!

Seems like alot of people like Diamondback tires. I have no personal experience with these tires, but I've always heard good things about them. I'm going to buy some goldines from them, but it's not a priority for me now..still waiting for those damn side exhaust covers.....

For a classic look the Diamondback goldlines are hard to beat.. The one draw back is the speed rating though...

I have been running Yokohama Dbs in 215/70 x 15 for a couple of years with no problems. Great handling tire. Designed to be quiet but reviews gave it strong ratings for wet or dry. Quiet means nothing in my 65 since it has sidepipes!

Default 1966 Tire Fitment

Thanks to everyone for their feedback. I think I'll start looking for some P125/70R-15's. Maybe a set of Michelin HydroEdge, Goodyear Assurance TripleTred, or Pirelli 4000's.
