Default Anyone know Holleys?

Can anyone tell me about a Holley carb I'm looking at?

It is supposedly a 950 Holley DP with mechanical secondaries built/tuned by a guy named Chuck Gulledge. It has an electric choke which could have been added later.

The number on the choke tower is LIST-4781-3 with 0160 under it. According to what I've read, this is an 850???

On the butterflies is stamped '289'.

Elsewhere on the carb is the number 6R 5538B.

When the present owner took it into a shop to replace the leaking diaphrams the guy said this was a very desirable pro-built carb???

I'm looking for a new carb to run on my 555. Can this carb be massaged to get 1050 CFM?

Any responses are very much appreciated!

555

You should be able to see the work done on this carb.

I have seen carbs that will flow a lot better than advertised. But the fact that it has a choke tower tells me that it will not flow 1050cfm.

Yeah, my buddy Mark here is building a beast of a motor to put in his 69' vette. It was a helluva ride before, so I can't wait to get some "co-pilot" time in her once its done.

Have ear plugs...will ride along....

The race type carb bodies are actually worth the effort with respect to flow. It's also useful to thin the throttle shafts. Or you can do as I have done and bore the throttle body to 1 13/16's (stock is 1 3/4's) and thin the throttle shafts (you'll need to make butterflies but it's readily done on a lathe). Blend the casting mismatch out of the venturi's and you've got all you can get. Or go buy a different manifold and use a Dominator.
