Default Cooling Sys. Corrosion

Replacing heater core- Found white chalky corrision around where heater hose connects to the block. Also had extreme corrosion where small hose (that connects to radiator)comes off the top of the expansion tank. The corrosion had partially eaten away the nipple on the expansion tank. I have had a "Rad-Cap" with the diode on the car for 2 yrs hoping that would take care of any corrosion. Maybe its my choice of anti-freeze??

How often do you change your anti-freeze/coolant? I change it in all my seldom-driven cars every 2-3 years, and have never had any corrosion issues. I still use the "green stuff", and will until my supply is gone, then will probably switch to the Zerex G0-5 type.

It had been about 2+ yrs since my last anti-freeze change. Maybe I should go 18 months or so.....thx.

I was told a while ago to use distilled water to dilute the anti-freeze in regards to corrosion. I don't know if its true but figure it can't hurt.

Default Corrosion of cooloing system

I recommend always using distilled water to dilute the anti-freeze coolant and put in an anti-corrosion additive (NAPA sells a Macs product that a local mechanic recommends). Tap water often has lots of minerals in it.

I have had no problems using this method..

I think I'll make up a "Zerex G05, Distilled Water, Anti-Corrosion cocktail" and feed that to my 327/365 !! Thanks to ALL for the responses. As usual this forum is the place to go !
