Default Freeze plug change, need memory upgrade

As long as the engine is out, seems like a good time to install some brass freeze plugs.

Last time I changed freeze plags was in High School auto shop in 1974.

As I recall, I punched a hole in the old plug with a punch, and levered the old freeze plugs out.

Installation involved a tool that was hand held like cold chisel , but had different size pucks that screwed on the end to fit each plug, then a hammer was used on the end of the handle to drive the plug into its hole.

Is that correct, or am I confusing that with a cam bearing installation tool?

What sealant to use on new plugs? Red RTV, or something else?

PS: this also seems like a good time to install the second set of 2 degree shims on top of the cross member to get back into postive caster, as long as all that radiator stuff is out of the way. (more project creep)

Thanks,
Doug

freeze plugs are easily removed by knocking ONE SIDE in so it sits sideways in the hole, grab it with a pair of plyers & they usually come out pretty easy. I've never knocked one in that I couldn't reach & still easily remove!!
Good luck

Good luck

For installition I use a 1/2" drive socket put on the 6" extension backwards.

Permatex #2 gets painted around the hole and smeared around the plug.
