Default BB Distributor and Valvetrain Oiling

It was mentioned to me that there is a difference on the bottom of the BB dist shaft that forces more oil up top of the engine. Specifically, it can even quiet noisy lifters!! Also, owners have added the change using JB weld or something

Anybody have more info, specifically what years might be affected??
Thanks, Mike

If there is, it will be news to me.

You can grind a slot to provide more oil to the cam/dist gear interface.

The '66 and older blocks needed a special groove in cam and bearing to provide oil to lifters.

But otherwise it's all the same stuff.

This is an original big block distributor.

This is one that has been "modified".

If you do a search for "distributor", you will find the thread (not that long ago).

P.S. The pics were sent to me by members here (they are not my distributors).

Default "Early" Factory Distributors

The info above is correct.

All the early years' distributors had to be installed in the "correct" position with respect to completing the oil system in both the SB's and the BB's. Back then if the vacuum advance location and the #1 spark plug wire was correct it "guaranteed" the oil system was set to go.

I'm not certain here, but I believe this was on the distributor's using the "cast-iron" housing's only!

If the "machined" groove, that was only 3/4's of the way around the housing, ended up in the wrong place, it actually became a restriction.

Thanks, Gary in N.Y.

P.S. Below here is a few photos of a '66 BB Vette, TI, restored unit with the "correct" housing.

That makes sense...so that's a '65 and '66 distributor to go along with the rear cam bearing/grooved journal deal?

I gotta admit.....haven't messed with one of those in a long time!
