Riding with Private Malone
Friend told me about this song...have no idea if it was popular or what, but I thought is was worth printing here..... I don't know about the melody, but the words are great....what do you think?
I was just out of the service thumbing through the classifieds
when an ad that said old chevy some how caught my eye
the lady didn't know the year or even if it ran
but I had that thousand dollars in my hand
It was way back in the corner of this old ramshackle barn
thirty years of dust and dirt on that green army tarp
when I pulled the cover off it took away my breath
what she'd called a Chevy was a sixty six corvette
I felt a little guilty as I counted out the bills
but what a thrill I got when I sat behind the wheel
I opened up the glove box and that's when I found the note
the date was nineteen sixty six and this is what he wrote
Chorus
He said my name is Private Andrew Malone
if you're reading this then I didn't make it home
but for every dream that's shattered another one comes true
this car was once a dream of mine now it belongs to you
and though you may take her and make her your own
you'll always be riding with Private Malone
Well it didn't take me long at all I had her running good
I love to hear those horses thunder underneath her hood
I had her shining like a diamond and I'd put the rag top down
all the pretty girls would stop and stare as I drove her through town
the buttons on the radio didn't seem to work quite right
but it picked up that oldie show especially late at night
I'd get the feeling sometimes if I turned real quick I'd see
a soldier riding shotgun in the seat right next to me
Chorus
It was a young man named Private Andrew Malone
who fought for his country and never made it home
but for every dream that's shattered another one comes true
this car was once a dream of his back when it was new
he told me to take her and make her my own
and I was proud to be riding with Private Malone
One night it was raining hard I took the curve too fast
I still don't remember much about that fiery crash
someone said they thought they saw a soldier pull me out
they didn't get his name but I know without a doubt
Chorus
It was a young man named Private Andrew Malone
who fought for his country and never made it home
but for every dream that's shattered another one comes true
this car was once a dream of his back when it was new
I know I wouldn't be here if he hadn't tagged along
that night I was riding with Private Malone
oh thank god i was riding with Private Malone

It also has a video that you could watch on CMT. The car is a red 66 with a BB hood, can't really see much of the engine except some of the distributor IIRC, I haven't seen it in a while. There is a lot of footage of the car in the video.
Just wondering how those brakes were after having it sit for a few decades.

it was top ten on the country charts, but that would suppose you listen to country music radio or CMT - I listen on the ITunes radio to country every so often since there is NO country station in the entire metro NYC area anymore. I npretty much like all music . . .

This urban legend has been around dating back to 1961. I've personally heard it a half dozen times from people who swear that it happened to a friend...uncle... cousin... neighbor... etc.

That song is on the CD in my Escalade right now. I still play it all the time. There two things you have to respect in that song. Corvettes and anyone in any branch of the sevice in the USA.

I've heard variations of that story too several times over the years. At least once in my case it turned out to be legit. I lived in New Braunfels, TX in 84 and 85 and was restoring a 69 Z/28. I met a local guy who had a nice 67 Camaro and we became friends. He knew of a 68 Camaro in a garage and it was the same old story, except for the fact that the guy came back from Vietnam alive and died in 1977. He knew the family and they still had the car. I wasn't expecting much but we went to look at it and it was an untouched 40K mile 68 RS/SS with a 396-325 horse motor, 4 speed, white w/ black bumblebee stripe and virtually no options, it even had a bench seat. A buddy of mine was in town and had been looking for a Camaro and bought it right then for around 4K IIRC, which was a pretty hefty price for a 1st Gen Camaro back then.
He tore it down but never did anything with it. I begged him to sell it to me a few times but it was always "I'm going to restore it one day". He up and sold it to some guy a few years ago without telling me. I was very disappointed, I would have sold my 67 Corvette to buy that car.

Addendum: I was in a differential shop last year dropping off a posi unit for another friend to go in his 66 L-72 Biscayne. There was a freshly restored 68 BB Camaro there and it was the same car. The new owner had actually done something with it, not a correct resto like I would have done but still a nice looking car.
