1957 Corvette Transmission Numbers
There was a 1957 Corvette 3-speed transmission for sale on e-bay. It has an assembly code beginning with "M". The information I have found indicates that "M" stands for Muncie and that these transmissions were for use in passenger cars and commercial applications. I understand that the Corvette 3-speed transmissions were made in Saginaw and the code begins with "S".
The transmission for sale has all the correct casting numbers to fit a 1957 corvette, and a side mounted shifter as well. The seller stated that it came from a 1957 Corvette. Was Muncie operating in 1956/57?
Can anyone enlighten me on the "M"??

Thinking about this, it's probably a Corvette tailpiece that was bolted to a passenger car maincase. Corvettes and cars apparently had the same maincase casting number.
