Any one need a Muncie trans rebuilder?
A customer came to me today saying he installed a Muncie that he was told was rebuilt into his Chevelle.
He said he couldn't get the shifter adjusted because he could not get the trans into neutral. I told him to remove the trans and bring it to me.
Here are some pics of the trans. In the 30 something years of doing transmissions, this one takes the cake.
The guy who did this must be Bubba's teacher.
I haven't taken the main shaft out yet so I have no idea what else to expect.
Can you spot the problems?
Apart from the tons of silicone, the major problem here is the 3rd-4th slide is backward which will only allow neutral and 3rd. The shorter bolt was cut too short from a longer one. The two top outer bolt holes are stripped and the gasket was just the way you see it when I pulled the cover.
If you look at the 3rd gear syncro and hub you will see how worn the are, this will probally grind into gear and/or pop out of gear.
The clip that holds the speedo gear in place is missing.
This one I have never seen. The counter gear shaft is in backwards!
The counter shaft is protruding out approx 1/8" which will not allow the trans to bolt flush with the bell.
This last pic shows the retaining nut on backwards.
I will take the rest of the trans apart this weekend. I don't think I can been surprised any more.

The front (input shaft) bearing appears to be mounted with some kind of bondo to make up the slop in the housing.
Typical Muncie wallowed housing bore. A very good machinist can make a thin sleeve and bore the case to repair it. Not a cheap fix.

Just in time for Halloween !! What a horror-endous mess ! What's with the bolts coming down into the side of the case. Yea , the front sliders on backwards, the shafts in backwards, and the front nut is on backwards, wrong speedo gear. What else that you can't see? EYUCK !

[QUOTE=buns;1562469041]He wasted an entire tube of high temp silicone sealer when he could have saved money by using the low temp stuff. What a maroon![QUOTE]

The problem is, he didn't buy "5SPEEDS" Video like I did!

Gaack , that's the worst "rebuild" of anything, anywhere, at any time. I'll bet the buyer is plenty mad

The rear of the cluster gear shaft is a larger diameter than the nose of the shaft. Thus, with the rear of the shaft froced into the front hole, that hole is now extremely oversized!!! The only way to save/use the case is to have a competant shop bore/sleeve the case (just for starters).
