Default O/T ARCO Graphite Motor Oil

I have 6 quarts of ARCO graphite motor oil in unopened cans. This oil was available during the first oil "crisis" in the 1970's. The can indicates a 5% increase in gas mileage. I used it in all my cars back then with no problems.

I have two questions:

- is there any reason that it couldn't be used in a beater?

- anyone remember why they stopped selling it?

Thanks

I did a lot of work for a local ARCO dealer back in the 70's. He used to give me cases of the graphite oil and I used it in my Corvairs ( didn't own any Corvettes back then). I never saw any kind of increase in gas mileage but I had no problems with the oil, although I did wonder if the graphite would drop out of suspension over time. About a year ago I found a case of the stuff in a storage shed and I am now using it for chainsaw blade oil.

One of my clients was a real stickler about his cars, even the used Oldsmovbiles and Buicks he'd pick up and refurbish as commuters.

He used the Arco Graphite for years and swore by it for a quiet valvetrain and better mpg, never a problem.

On the other hand, some shops wouldn't do an oil change with the stuff because it would almost irrevocalbly contamionate their funnels and drain pans!

I used it in all of my cars with no problems. Great stuff.
It should be fine in your beater car.

I remember using that stuff in the 70s, and it did increase my MPG.

Never used their oil, but did use their Methanol formulated gas long enough to dissolve a Q-Jet (Carter manufactured) carb. on my 70 Vette. Yes, you read that correctly: Methanol (not ethanol).

Q-Jet float bowl area, including the float valve seat threads were a goner.
Threads turned into a grey paste.

Odd, but ARCO pulled out of the Chicago area right after that happened.
