Default What's the current price for a high quality total paint job these days?

What's the average current price for a high quality total black clearcoat paint job these days? The old paint has been removed down to the fiberglass.

Thank you

It's more then the paint...body work (or lack there of) will show up a lot more with the darker paints.

I stripped mine and with help of friends, did all the body work. You can get a good video from Ecklers that shows how to do body work.

I bought my primer, supplies and paint, top quality for about $1,200. I found someone with their own paint booth that would spray it for 500. He said he would color sand it for $250.

, it isn't so much the cost of the paint and supplies, it is the cost of labor to do all the block sanding in between each coat starting with the primer all the way to the end......$15k for top notch....

It all depends on how straight the car is now and how much prep will be needed to get it ready to spray. There is a lot of work to be done after the paint is stripped. A car that is going to be sprayed black will have to be block sanded many, many times.

I stripped my car myself and did a lot of the work but ended up having a couple of body shop guys that I knew come over and work on it at night and weekends. They had it ready to spray in a couple of months.

After paying them and then another guy to spray it at their dealership's fancy spray booth, and buying the materials (Sikkens base/clear, not cheap) I ended up having about 4K in it which I thought was very reasonable.

If you have some friends who do paint and body or if you know a little about it you can save some big bucks.

IMHO it depends upon how much body work is required before you can start spraying primer. If thats your car in the avatar, and you want to get rid of the fender flares, I agree with the previous opinions that a top-notch job will probably run you atleast $15k.

Default Price for top paint job

Hello
Bring it down to Houston $5000.00 if you need to strip the car. Prices back East tend to be much higher. Maybe because there is lots of competion in the Houston TX area. I had my 65 all chrome taken off done blocked wet sanded and detailed out the door for $3500 There was very little body work that needed to be done. the shop used 2 stage Basecoat clear coat PPG/Seikens paint/clear and primer. I am very hsappy with the work

I wouldn't pay $15K no matter what - that just seems exorbitant to me. Even if I had to do a bunch of the work myself and just hire a 'trigger man' to spray - I'd do it to avoid that bill. If I had $120K BB '67 or something it might be different but I have a $55K '61 so I have to keep it reasonable.

I think the labor rates in the central area are much less than the left or right coasts. If you live where the cost of living is high, you pay high prices, if it's low, you pay low prices. $15K is not unreasonable for show quality. Neither is $5K in some parts of the states. Labor rates can range from $40 to $100 per hour. Paint material is fairly constant so not much savings unless you use a lower quality paint. As mentioned prior, body work can be a large portion of any show quality paint job. There is usually much more than expected.

Just paid $14,250 for this. Included media removal of existing paint and lots of body work.

But the price was for a vehicle with everything already removed and the painter did not do the reinstallation, just strip, body work (some custom), realign/fill the panels/doors as necessary, and paint. But this was a total color change and things that normally wouldn't get paint (e.g., deep inside the door hinge area) were also done.

BUT, the job is of the highest quality. When you rub the paint, you cannot feel the stripes. This is a whole lot harder to do because it requires masking/painting then remasking/painting so that there are the same # of coats of the two colors under the clear.

The horrors that lie beneath. The whole left rear quarter had been re-done (botched) in the past from prior accidents before I got the car about 25 years ago now:

Default "Sticker Shock"

I live in Northern California and recently asked a buddy who owns a local shop what the cost would be for a full paint job on my Mosport 66 Coupe. The labor rate here in the SF Bay Area is quite high. I know the quality of this shops work since they did a complete color change on my '64 GTO ten years ago and that included removal of all glass, front clip and doors. That paint job cost me $7K and turned out great. The estimate for a full paint job on my Coupe, with me doing the removals and reinstallation of all trim and bumpers is $14,865.
A previous poster commented that spending nearly $15K for a paint job on a street driver would be considered excessive and I completely agree but from a body shop's perspective, the labor and materials still cost the same whether the car is a Top Flight rare model or is a beater that's been through the ringer.

I've also been looking for a decent street quality SB 65-67 roadster for the last year and had been 'quesstimating' that a color change might be in the neighborhood of $7K to $10K. Hearing these up-to-date price estimates for paint jobs (in my particular area) are making me rethink the 'beaters' and maybe consider finding something that has a decent paint job already.

This 66 coupe was recently completed in So. Calif. at a cost of $8700, including disassembly, rechroming bumpers and door handles, strip to bare glass, repaint and reassembly. It was painted with a single stage polyurethane. The job took about 5 months - body damage repair was limited to the front passenger side.
