Default 64 327 dip stick length

What is the correct length for a dipstick on a 64 327/350 with a 5 qt oil pan.

Also what should the dipstick tube length be?

The 327/350 HP engine was not available until 1965. Do you have a 1964 engine with a different horsepower rating (250,300,365,375 HP), or a 1965 -1968 327/350 HP engine?

Larry,

Yes, the engine has been redone and it is a 327, 350/360 hp.

Ok, my oil tube is 8 and 3/8" long.

The dipstick is 20 an 1/4" from the bottom part that goes into the tube to the add 1 qt mark.

Is this correct?

I found the following information in a 1972 Chevrolet Corvette Parts Book:

1. For all 1963-64 cars the distance from the guard or hilt on the dipstick to the FULL mark is 19-3/16 inch and to the ADD mark is 20 inches.

2. For 1965-72 cars (327, 350 cid) the distance is 20-5/32 inch to the FULL mark and 20-59/64 inch to the ADD mark.

There is no mention of the length of the corresponding upper oil dipstick tube. There are different part numbers for 1963-64 (#3826074) and 1965-72 (#3876784) however.

Do you have a standard pan or the SHP pan? What is your oil level on the dipstick after an oil/filter change and adding 5 quarts of oil to the engine?

Larry,

Very good info. My guess is that it is a standard pan, but I am not sure. With 5 qts it is close to full.

Doesn't matter if it's a 5-quart or 6-quart pan - both use the same dipstick and tube; the "full" and "add" level in both pans is the same.

Stratplus:

According to the information that I provided earlier, and confirmed by John Z, there is no difference in the dipsticks for the 4QT pan and the 5QT SHP pan for 1963-64 and 1965-72 for small-block cars.

It also appears that you have the correct 1963-64 dipstick based on your 20-1/4 (or so) inch measurement. Based on some additional research I did, I feel that the 8 inch dipstick tube you have is also the correct one for 1963-64.

I went out to the garage and measured the dipstick and tube from my 1967 car with its original 327/350 HP engine. It is 20-15/16 inch from the hilt to the ADD mark, which confirms the 1965-72 info I also gave you; and the tube into the block is 9 inches long.

The main thing is that the dipstick and tube are not mismatched between the 1963-64 and 1965-72 sets. And it appears that you have the correct set.
