Default Speedometer cable routing

Last year someone posted a picture with the proper speedometer cable routing... I searched the archives and could not find it..

I'd like to correct mine as now it has a cable tie to the parking brake pully...

Thanks,

Capt Roy

Default Mine just snapped with about 10K miles on it.

I must have done something wrong.

Default '65 with a 4-speed

I used a 90 degree adaptor at the trans to reduce stress at that point in the speedo cable.

Not to steal this thread but I used a 90 degree adapter (the kind with a steel lined cable with a metal brace) and it makes my cable too long. It hung out under the car. I am hoping that the one with a gear will take care of that problem.

I would like to see this too, and I would like to know the correct cable length (for a 66 4 speed).

I recently bought a replacement from LIC and is was about a foot longer than the one it replaced. This new one touches my exhaust pipe and the speedo needle bounces at speeds below 40.

Is it too long? How should it be tethered to keep it away from the hot exhaust?

This is what I can offer from my 1965 Assembly Manual.

If length is critical and difficult to find, or you want an adaptor, I have had great service from United Speedometer Service in Riverside, CA.

They will make a cable of any length you order, and adaptors that will correct speedometer errors.

Using the one clip mounted on inside the tunnel on my 66 to locate the cable under the car, my new replacement still loops close enough to the right exhaust pipe to touch it. Is my cable too long maybe, or is there something else I should be doing to keep it away from the hot exhaust pipe?

That's correct only for the 3-speed and Powerglide and '63-'64 4-speed; '65-up 4-speed routing is shown in the M20 section, as shown below.

Default Looks like two pretty acute bends.

The M-20 speedometer connection is on the right (passenger) side of the transmission and the firewall grommet is located to the left of the centerline.

That would give the impression of enough space to route the cable with gentle curves.

However, mine blew out at 10K miles. I would like to avoid this in the future, even if I must use two or three 90 degree adaptors and short runs of cable.

Case closed. I'm missing the J-clip that should be on the firewall. Previously installed cable was grey for a 63-64. Thank you.

Every 90* adapter significantly increases the load on the plastic speedo driven gear due to friction in the gears; if the cable is routed and clipped correctly, lubed, and not kinked, it'll last a lot longer than 10K miles.

Default J clip on driver side and drive on passenger??

Maybe better on this thread

I know this is an old thread, and that the speedo drive is supposed to be on the passenger side for this car, but what is confusing me is that the J clip in the transmission tunnel is on the driver side. Does that make sense (means the cable would have to wrap over the transmission after the retaining clip?
As usual I am sorry if this has been answered before but I could not find it in searches.

Thanks in advance for the advice if you can enlighten me

If your car is 65 or later 4 speed as John Z stated cable goes down passenger side. Maybe your car was original 3 speed or powerglide which was routed down driver side thus the j clip on driver side

All 3 and 4-speeds with backup lights had a J-clip on the driver's side of the tunnel for the pink/green wires from the backup light switch on the driver's side of the transmission.

That is mystery solved except I don't see any other j clips for the cable?
Thanks

They're on the PASSENGER side on a 4-speed, as shown on the Assembly Manual M20 cable routing sheet a couple of posts above.

Thanks again, but no sign on the passenger side of a j clip or where one might have been (like a broken stud), so im still perplexed
Anybody have a pic to help with my dilema?

What year is this car, and what transmission does it have, and what side is the speedo drive on?
