Default 1960 Le mans Corvettes

I noticed three photos of three Corvettes numbers 2 and 3 are visible in the book Corvette Dynasty. These cars were racing in the 1960 Le Mans endurance race. I also noticed the hoods were different with louvers on them . Were these custom built Corvettes like the Grand Sports of 1963 or just regular Corvettes with factory options? Are any of these three cars still in existence today?

There were four corvettes at Le Mans in 1960. I believe they all received extensive factory help. I also think that the cars were delivered from the factory with the standard race options but then were modified with GM race produced parts. Hopefully Loren Lundberg and Lance Miller owner of two of the cars will add infomation or correction to my post. Both great enthusiasts. Bruce Myers (sp) owns another one. I dont know about the fourth car.

The cars were heavily supported by Chevrolet. My web site has many photos taken in the day and of the restored cars. 60 LM Corvettes

A million $$$ search is underway for #1 (S/N 3535). The other cars are found and restored. Noland Adams' C-1 books have very complete histories of the cars.

Three cars were entered by Briggs Cunningham's team, a fourth by New York-based Alfred Momo of Maserati fame.

Alfred Momo was the technical wizard responsible for the success of the Briggs Cunningham Jaguars that ruled during the fifties. If you have ever looked under the Lister Jag they ran, it was a marvel. Full belly pan for aerodynamincs, air pickups to cool the center mount rear brakes and much much more. Momo was known for his attention to detail and engineering for reliability. Having a guy named Walt Hansgen for a driver didn't hurt either.

The Briggs Jags

Full belly pan on Lister Jag...Rusty Hansgen on right. Note engine oil pan just low enough for cooling purposes. Engine slightly turned in chassis for weight distribution.

More information on Briggs and Alfred Momo can be sourced in the book "Walt Hansgen - His life and the history of post-war American Road Racing." by Michael Argetsinger. (Argetsinger's dad set up and ran Watkins Glen). A great read.

Regards,

Fred

Default #4 car

Per (I believe) the FIA records the #4 car was entered by Lloyd Casner (who I think had the nickname Lucky and his race team was named Camoradi). Drivers were Ed Lilley and Fred Gamble with alternates Bob Said and George Constantine. The car was delivered thru Don Allen Chevrolet.

I think it was last registered in Temple Terrace (Tampa) in late 70s early 80s. Not too many barns there, long gone by now.
