"961" casting 396 or 427
How can one tell the difference between a 396 and 427 when it has a 961 casing number? I read somewhere the "961" 427 were very early in the 66 vette.
Thanks George

396 or 427 ???
Check the cylinder bore--The 396 is 4 & 3/32" and the 427 is 4 & 1/4". The stroke is the same at 3.76".

I cannot vouch for the truth one way or the other however I have heard a "story" that there were both "good and bad" 396 & 427 motors in 65 and 66. As I heard it the story went something like......... "the good ones could be overbored 30 or 60 over for a rebuild but that the the bad ones could not
Maybe someone like John Z will weigh in with the truth of the matter.
