Default "961" casting 396 or 427

How can one tell the difference between a 396 and 427 when it has a 961 casing number? I read somewhere the "961" 427 were very early in the 66 vette.
Thanks George

Default 396 or 427 ???

Check the cylinder bore--The 396 is 4 & 3/32" and the 427 is 4 & 1/4". The stroke is the same at 3.76".

I cannot vouch for the truth one way or the other however I have heard a "story" that there were both "good and bad" 396 & 427 motors in 65 and 66. As I heard it the story went something like......... "the good ones could be overbored 30 or 60 over for a rebuild but that the the bad ones could not

Maybe someone like John Z will weigh in with the truth of the matter.

the 65 corvette 396 blocks stamped "IF"could be bored out to 427 size,4.250 but only the corvette blocks. the other 396 blocks would go .060
