Default Cluthch and pressure plate, which one?

Installing a ZZ383 425 HP crate motor in my 63 Splitwindow. I need a recommendation for a clutch and pressure plate? And can a 11" be used?

Thanks

It can be used but you may need to change the starter and bellhousing if you don't have the correct ones as well as the flywheel. The 11" is definitely better but I'm sure a 10.5" clutch will be just fine. The 383 is a nice setup. Dave

I used a Spec 10.5" Stage 3+ on my 427 SB with 153 tooth 15 pound flywheel. It doesn't slip and has less peddle effort than the ZL-1 pressure plate I ued to use.

I have the 11" Centerforce II with a steel flywheel hooking up a 450HP 383 Stroker. Haven't yet road tested it, but consensus on this forum one year ago (including JohnZ's input) is that it's more than sufficient for spirited street use.

That's the same setup I use and it has worked exceptionally well and has a light foot pedal to boot.

Every day over the counter NAPA clutch kit. I have three of them in diff. cars. The one that takes the most abuse is a 427 small block with a 671 dual quad blower, with a 6 sp Richmond. I feel safe to say this car takes more abuse than most anyone on here gives there Vette. Burns outs , donuts, you name it. It's been in there two years now and still working fine. If your not going to the track you don't need all these fancy clutchs.

Hmmmm. I'm old enough to have lived through all the nasty crap with clutches, before they were forced to improve the product. I had a 3 finger unit in my 55 chevy blow up, stayed together in three large chunks and still worked. It fell out when I unbolted the pressure head.

I use CF units in three cars, flywheel to throwout bearing, zero problems.

All clutches sold today are better than the best unit you could buy in 1968.

If you think they are pricey, try one of the new McLeod units

I've used several LuK's in restorations, and several CFII's in project cars (including my 383 Grand Sport) - never had any issues with any of them. Avoid "race" clutches.

I noticed that! I just got my push rod deal figured out and the clutch adjusted. I can push on the pedal with my hand while standing outside the car. I can feel the freeplay, the pedal engagement, and the diaphram release with ease. I do have to figure out how to tell if I'm overcentering the clutch though, as I am going to the floor un-necessarily.

I pretty siked to actually use it now. I thought it would be a bear to use in town.

I don't think an 11" is better. The L88 and ZL1 used a 10.5. The 11" was available then but the 10.5 was Gm Engineering's choice for their 550+ HP L88. More pressure per square inch of disk.

The 11' CF clutch kit I got from Summit is as follows:
a.) Clutch Disc Organic,1-1/8" dia., 10 Spline, 11" Disc Dia. #CTF383735, $89.95

b.) Press Plate, Diaphragm style, 11" #CTF-CTF165552, $175.95

c.) Throwout bearing, 1-1/8" shaft dia., CTF-N1716, $33.95

Nice thing about Summit is they do not have a shipping charge. Because this stuff is heavy!
They do however have a handling charge of $8.95.
And I have the 168 tooth flywheel.

I have a 153 tooth and will use the 10.4.. I order through Kragen, who matches Summit and gives me 10% military discount .. on EVERYTHING. I love it.
