Distributor 1110985 - What Do I Have Here?
I have a distributor in my hands. It is a Delco 1110985 dated 2J2. This model number was used in a 62 340HP car. But, the date appears to be September of 62 which seems more like a 63 aplication. However, this distributor is not listed for 63.
What else is interesting is that the distributor looks like a TI distributor with the rotating pole piece and a square shaped pickup. There is an orange lead and a black lead exiting the housing. Also stamped in the neck just to the right of the tach cable housing is the number '60'.
And,stamped on the base plate is "Patent 2769047".
What can anyone tell me about this distributor and where it was used? By the way, it appears to be in perfect condition.
Thanks!!

The only usage I show for the 1110985 is for the '62 340hp, but it originallly was a point-type distributor - maybe that one's a conversion from T.I. Specialties or one of the other distributor outfits?

The 1110985 was stock for a 1962 340 HP. But it was also sold for some time afterwards as a high performance distributor for other Chevy small blocks because of the dual points, no vacuum advance, and the tach drive. Perhaps that explains the date on the tag.
Can't say about the set up inside. Something's changed because this distributor like all other Chevy point distributors only had 1 black wire coming out of the base. Maybe it was converted to something.

Thanks everyone. The consensus seems to be (and I asked locally as well) that this particular distributor started life as a dual point, no vacuum advance high performance distributor sold by GM over the counter and that it probably never saw the engine compartment of a 62. At some point, it was converted to some type of breakerless ignition.

As mentioned, the 985 was originally the dist used in the 62 340hp/327. It is a dual point, mechanical advance only dist. The dual points were joined together with a jumper wire and then a single black wire went to the coil, just like any other point dist. Beginning in 62, ALLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLL Vette dist had a tach drive. The date, 2J2, would be 1962-Oct-2. Therefore, as you suspect, it would not have been in a 62 car, and as mentioned, was proably sold over the parts counter. In its day, this would have been a good performance dist. With something like a PerTronix conversion, in the right application, it would still be a good dist. No telling how many of these were sold over the counter.
