Default HEI Distributor installation questions

I'm in the middle of installing an aftermarket HEI distributor in my 1966 427 390 HP Corvette. However, before I start it up & want to make sure I did everything correct.

1. I installed the HEI distributor - no problems
2. By-passed the ballast resistor - tied pink & black wires together.

3. I plan to connect the pink wire that used to connect to the coil terminal to the Bat terminal on HEI?
( I have to fabricate this wire because it was not included w/ the HEI distributor. I want it to look like a GM connection )
4. Does the HEI distributor require a gnd wire?
( if so, what is the recommended connection point? )

I wish GM would sell HEI Distributors for C2 Vettes: w/ a mechanical tech, installation instruction & required interface wires!

Thanks!
Andy

Andy,
You can buy the battery side input "dongle" (connector w/short wire) at Summit or Jegs. Look for HEI connector or something like that. Then you just have to splice it into a switched 12V wire or post (like on top of the ballast resistor).

Default Does a HEI Distributor require #12 ".140" thick wire?

I recently purchased a GM HEI Terminal "Big End 54105" for a HEI distributor installation on my 1966 427. The diameter of the red wire that came with the terminal is .140". This is much thicker than the stock pink .090" wire that I want to use after by-passing the ballast resistor. The stock pink wire now has 12.8 volts with the key on.

Here is my question:
Does anyone have any data that indicates the HEI must have a .140" thick wire "~ #12 wires" to perform properly? Will the stock .090" "~#22" supply enough amperes for maximum performance?

I'm seeking maximum performance but do not want to start adding addition wires or "molest" a perfectly good wire harness.

Thanks in advance for helping!

The HEI was introduced in 1975. I believe it is powered by #10 awg wire. Back in the day Jacobs Electronics recomended a solid state relay when converting pre 75 Chevies to HEI. The HEI does not use a start wire from the starter solenoid. I will do some searching.

MSD suggests using a minimum gauge of 14 on their HEI distributors. The ignition switch is fed by a 12 gauge wire. You might get away with replacing the 18 gauge that currently feeds your distributor with a 14 gauge wire. This wire travels from the ignition switch through the grommet in the firewall, so you wouldn't have to hack into your original harness.
