Default 65 Vette 4 Speed Shifter Removal

I need to change my manual trans shifter and need to know what needs to be removed to get it out . It looks like its buried up in the tunnel . I see the exhaust and hanger and maybe the front bracket that needs to be removed . Is there an easier way ? Thanks

I am in the process of removing mine as we speak. Mines a '67', but there should be little or no difference. The first thing I removed is the shifter ****, spring and 'T' lever. Then I removed the three linkages at the transmission. Now, I have side exhaust which makes access to the tunnel a bit easier. I am going in for the T/O bearing so I'm having to support and jack aft part of engine so I can get access to the tranny mt and shifter bracket. I haven't got that far yet, but it looks like once the tranny mount and bracket are out of the way, the shifter should slide down out of the boot and removed from under the car. I'm hoping I don't have to remove the console but I may if I can't slide it down from below. Lets see if any of our drive line specialists will chime in on this one.

You don't have to take the console out. The shifter will go right up through the hole in the boot, just be careful that you don't rip it when installing the shifter. I believe you 67 has a frame mounted bracket for the shifter, am I correct? May want to look at getting an older shifter mount that goes directly to the transmission case. It uses the three Allen wrench screws. Unless you are trying to keep it 100% stock for judging.

By the way, you might find it easier to remove and install the throw out bearing if you turn the transmission on its side and slide it back into the rear mount once you have all the mounts out. I believe you turn on to the cover side and slide it back. Makes it easier to get to the throw out bearing. JMO

Thanks for the tip "66BLKBB". I'm trying to minimize disassembly as much as possible. I'm assuming my T/O is the culprit for the chattering/chaffing sound I'm hearing, but may have to go further.

Mine does the same thing sometimes and I am thinking I have the wrong pressure plate installed. I think mine is the straight finger unit and according to JohnZ it should be a bent finger design. I am contemplating changing mine again.
