A cop friend of mine has a 64 sitting in his basement. His wife wrecked it in 1978. It's been there since. It's a 250HP 3 speed. He won't sell it and if he ever dose I think he thinks it's worth alot of money. I told him it has 3 strikes. Base motor,3 speed and a 64 to boot. Oh 4 strikes it's hit in the nose.

A couple of years ago a corvette shop in Charlotte had a low hp 63 red vert with white top and interior along with a 3 speed that they had restored. The owner had passed away during the restoration process so the car had sat for a rather long time. The shop owner wanted the car gone and I agreed to make an offer of 23,000 that was suggested to me would be accepted by the family. However there was a change of heart and a family member decided to keep the car in memory of her dad.

...since I love the 3spds and the "rarity" of it too, I look for them. In my last 31yrs of Corvette "looking", I've probably viewed 40+ 1963-1969 3spd cars.
...there was a hardly any option Red '67 coupe last year at St. Louis NCRS National going for it's 5th Star on the Bowtie Award. I believe it had like 17K original miles. This may have been the one at Bloomington.
...a good friend in high school had a '63 triple black roadster, 327/250hp 3spd car that we cruised everywhere for a few years.
...looked at a Red/Red '64 roadster at Corvettes@Carlisle in the corral which had a 3spd in it for $33K. One of the dealers there also had a '69(may have been '68)3spd roadster for sale that I also looked at.
...locally there was a White/Blue interior '67 roadster with a 3spd running around here for a few years.

I have a 68 conv. 3 speed original 300 hp motor car. And before I got hurt and could still drive i loved driving that 3 speed if i was going to be in much traffic or when the wife and were out crusing road side sales. First gear is low and the car really feels quick even with the std 3:36 rear gears. Then second cripes is so long, you can do like 90 or 95 in second. But second was always a crazy feel gear you could drive the dam thing around town like an automatic almost it would go down to about 5 mph without bucking and if you just stepped lightly it would pickup to easily with no bucking. It never felt to be over reving at 55 or 60 so you'd almost forget when you were just crusing and about 15 to 60 was just smooth and thoughtless.
I liked it so much I repainted the car a non Corvette red. I used Dodge Viper red which is brilliant. Put new wiring, new seat covers, new door panels, i bought anew conv. top which i have a guy going to put on now oh rechromed the bumpers new brakes .. da da da you guys know how it goes. Anyway three speeds can be fun.

I went to school with a felllow who had a white/blue '63 convertible that had a three-speed. Cool car for a college student, but certainly would have been cooler with a four-speed.
Saw him many years later at high school reunion and he was driving a Chrysler Sebring convertible. He said he got rid of the Corvette when he got married and started having children. You've probably heard that before.

...about 20yrs ago I viewed a super rare, probably non desirable '65, but I would have loved it. It was a Red/Red '65 roadster, "drum brake car", base motor, 3spd. I do not believe it even had a radio. Talk about "simple".

The 62 300/327 I owned many years ago had a 3 speed. With the low first gear ratio it made that 327 feel pretty strong. Having grown up on a farm double clutching tractors it was no problem downshifting with no synhros in low gear.
The car probably had a 3:08 rear because when I put in a muncie close ratio 4 speed first gear was way too high.....eventually claiming the clutch. While the muncie was a much better transmission, the old 3 speed was much better suited to the car the way it was built.

Bought a 63 with a 3-speed way back in late 63; within about 3 weeks, I replaced it with a 62 4-speed (same tranny & shifter as 63) and sold the 3-speed for $50 to a guy who was going to use it in his Chevy.

My 59 which I bought in 62 was a three speed with 270 H.P. motor. I never understood. The ratios were odd. Essentially the same as the close ratio 4 speed without second gear so you really pushed first to the redline before shifting to second which was 1.3 to 1. Good for passing though.
I lived in Warren, Mi and Mauri Rose (the old Indy racer who worked for G.M.) saw it at my Dad's service station. He told me to get my Dad to pony up for a 4 speed. Never did though. Sold the car to buy a 271 H.P.
mustang.
