I was using it while restoring the 63. Rust would form under it. NCRS and Bloomington were real picky about coatings. I would tell you what I switched to but since that was 20 yr ago I don't remember. I've slept since then.

Default Protect Nuts and Bolts from Rust!

How do you think painting the heads of the bolts with clear nail polish would work?

It is almost invisible on fingernails (granted it is somewhat shiny) and seems to hold up for a while on fingernails which are constantly touching things and getting wet. How weel would it hold to metal though?

Supposed to protect bare metal parts.

On bolts, unless needing Loctite, I use anti-sieze.
