I've used this on the last 3 cars I've restored. It's bulletproof and brake fluid proof. http://www.eastwoodco.com/shopping/p...roductID=14351

What is your goal?

Basic protection?

NCRS factory correct appearing?

Durability?

Eastwood has also come up with a new ceramic paint for chasis. I tried it on some a-arms and it is terrific. No ned to powder coat with this stuff.

I'm in the process of rebuilding the rear, and want
it to appear correct. The judging guide says semi-
gloss black, but which paint looks the closest to
factory paint.

John Deere blitz black. go to your local dealer and buy a gallon of it and spray it on. or buy a bunch of rattle cans and knock your self out.

The John Deere blitz black, Krylon semi-gloss black and the Eastwood I linked above, all have the exact same gloss level which is acceptable according to the NCRS. The difference is in durability. The first two are a cheap enamel and the Eastwood is a 1K epoxy.

you can always buy a hardener from a paint place and add it too the first two

True but, then you have to deal with isocyanates and it still won't be solvent/brake fluid proof.

I used slightly-flattened Imron 2-stage on mine. Powder-coating is probably best, but around here it's nearly as expensive as chrome plating (that is an exaggeration, but not much of one).
