Default Engine painting

I recently picked up a 350 that was built up a couple of years ago. Aside from a few missing things (pulleys, carb, flywheel) its basically ready to drop in. It was pulled (in running condition) not long before I bought it. The only problem is that its black...I want orange.

The paint is in good condition. Its not worn out, scratched up, chipped to pieces, or peeling at all. The engine is pretty clean...no gunk build-up in the various nooks and crannies. It was either kept clean or the seller put some serious elbow grease into getting it ready for sale.

Do you guys foresee a problem if I just treat the black paint as primer? I'm thinking I can just wipe it down with lacquer thinner to take off the outer layers of paint/grease and go to town with the orange paint.

scuff it up with some 320 where you can just to get the shine off. Wipe it down and shoot it. Cured paint is as good a base as any.

Did you get a lot of brush marks from brushing on the paint?

Its not a crate, just a built up mid 70s block.

Thanks for the confirmation and saving me a ton of work.

I think he was just making the point crate motors come black, which he bought and painted his orange, similar to what you have and want to do..
