383 stroker hydraulic roller cam
Ideas for a nice sounding, lopy, get excited type hydraulic roller cam for a 383 stroker? I heard Mike's cam in his 65 vert 383 last weekend and it sounded great. What do you guys think?

Ken do think the car can handle the added torque without breaking anything. I was concerned about my T-5 trans until I spoke to a Cobra owner with 520 hp and a T-5. He has been driving the car hard for 4 + yrs, and claims to not have had any problems. He does not slam the trans., but does auto cross it. However, the Cobra does way less then our cars, maybe 600 lbs less.
Just wondering.

comp cams makes a series of what they call thumper cams for street engines. they are hyd roller assys. and i have used them with the bee hive springs in two 383's , one in a 48 custom chevy truck 3800 lbs. with a 700r4 and a 2500 stall converter with great performance from idle to 6500. the other was a chevelle 4 speed 355 rear. both installs were to replace wiped cams. they are dual pattern grinds with moderate lope. if you call them for a recommend i feel they suggest a cam a little on the conservative side which is better than too much. both cams were the same lsa and i forget what it was......i don't own stock in comp cams but they both degreed in nicely. we did have to order pushrods .050 longer for both mills after checking geometry...just my 2 cents..good luck

I would give Comp Cams a call. That's what I did for my selection. They need to know what the motor is made of (compression ratio, heads, etc), what the transmission is and the rear end ratio. They have a pretty extensive selection to choose from.
Make sure you select what not only sounds good but works well with your package.

Is the 383 gonna be done from a Gen 1 ver. 1 or ver 2? Seems that the Comp Cams Thumpr is retrofit only...for the pre-'87 350 version 1 blocks that had the 2 piece rear main seal. My 383 has the one piece rear seal version 2 which included the factory hyd. rollers and front thrust plate, which the Thumpr will not fit. I think that you can still get a Comp Cams Hyd. roller cam but it won't be "Thumpr", but close if you mimick the duration, lift and LSA.
To answer your question about a lopey cam, I read alot and was told that lower LSA (close to 107-110) would lope nicely. Isky has some good ones. Crane has some too, but Comp has the most. I even looked into Sig Erson cams for awhile (old school). I ended up with a Crane but LSA 112 so not one that you would be interested in. I wanna enjoy my street driving.

Mark, I used the bell housing that came with the trans.. The trans mounted to the block with no problem.
This photo illustrates how I off set the shifter to get it in the center. I have photos of the whole install, and can send them to you if you'll send me your e-mail address.
