Default Fuel Tank Leaking around Sending Unit

So my fuel tank started leaking around the sending unit. Called my father-in-law and he sent over an extra one that he had in storage. O-ring looked to be in above average to great condition. Took out the old and cleaned all areas back to metal. Installed the sending unit and the o-ring. The darn thing is still leaking. Tried 3 times and all three times it leaked.

Is there some kind of trick or am I missing something???

Thanks.

Is the seal leaking or the terminals on the sending unit? Is it a bad REPRO as discussed here: REPRO

Soak the Oring in motor oil overnight before installation. (JohnZ).

When I changed out my tank and sender I found that the tank o ring was larger than the one that came with the sender. I used the larger one to obtain a tighter fit. Might try a replacment o ring if the oil soak dosent work. Could end up with a larger one?!?

Good luck.

You did say if the gasket was cork or rubber. I like the cork ones better and you might try spreading some gasket sealer on both sides of the gasket when installing.
Also check earlier posts on this problem. Good luck.

I bought a new one that leaked. Thought it was the o-ring - it wasn't. One of the terminal solders was bad and it leaked around the terminals.

No cork gasket for the sending unit - they all used a fat rubber O-ring between the sending unit flange and the tank flange.

I have never had much luck with an old O-ring. Use a new one.

Thanks for the responses gentlemen. I going to pick up a new O ring. Should I still soak the new one in motor oil?

Thanks,

Roger

It was an Engineering requirement in the plant to soak it for two hours; they must have had a reason or they wouldn't have specified it.

John:

Speaking as an engineer myself, not every engineering request or requirement had a good reason.

Maybe this one did, though.
