Opinion on a 58
Hi All
A friend just got a 2 top 58. I checked it out and I think it is nice.
Needs some clean up and some love also needs the fluid changes belts hoses and clamps. It looks like it has some original parts. What are your thoughts good and bad.
Opinions
Please Look at my Album for Pic's

Looks like a nice car but I guess it depends on how much he paid for it to determine if it is a good deal or not. The only thing that jumps out at me is the incomplete painting of the cove. Not sure why people do that. 58's are very distinctive with the louvered hood and trunk spears.

Looks good to me. I agree, I don't understand why the cove isn't painted the whole way. But, I know some like it like that. Overall, the car looks sharp.

Looks very nice from the pics you have. Only a few things I can see (as an owner of a 58) is the master cylinder appears incorrect, the cove painting as others have stated and the bezel around the speaker. Minor stuff, but as a driver, it all works for me. Also yellow paint on the wheels just outside the hubcaps (should be silver), but all in all looks real nice. As was stated, depending on what was paid will determine how good the deal is.

Thank you for your opinions and expertise’s.
I did not notice the cove; I guess that will be taken care of and a complete detail cleaning.
The yellow on the wheels I thought was the way it was done with
Panama Yellow and a few other colors in 58. I know some were silver and others black. What’s up with the master cylinder looks period correct, what should it look like. Have and Pic's.
The bezel around the speaker. What should that look like the fit is good?
He paid good $$$$, I would post the amount but it is not my car. I have told him about this forum and he will join soon.
I will leave that up to him.
He just wants to know about the condition and how original it is.
Thank You All Please keep them coming.

I could care less about the Vettes------------how about the 57 Chevy???
Oh ya, of all the dual headlight cars (58-62), the 58 is my favorite. I have always liked the louvers and bars!

I like the car; it looks nice. Love the color. I especially like the fact the gauges have the correct "dots" instead of the wrong-year lines on the faces that many cars have.
Could you give a price "range?" (i.e. more than $60k, less than $80k?)

Aside from the obvious points already mentioned, that is a pretty car. Is the engine supposed to be original? The heads are late 59 and later, not 58 as well as the engine mount.

I am going to remove the valve covers and check the numbers.

1958 = silver wheels. Earlier cars were body color; later were black. This is a mistake made on many '58s. Wheels should be silver.

I talked to my friend he said it was alright to give the price he paid.
It was in the low $60,000
I think it was a good deal. With some TLC and a couple of $$$$ it could be a very nice looking and almost NCRS Vette.
Not that I'm an NCRS kind of guy.

I know about the front engine support with the relief notch it should not have.

Also the ballast resistor is replacement version, which is certainly functional, but not original appearing. Ditto the copper choke tube.
Still a nice car.

Forget about the Vettes and the 57 Chevy, tell me about the T-28!

The 58 heads should be 770 castings and would have the upper valve cover hold down screws closer together than the bottom screws. In late 59 heads changed over to parallel cover screws. Unless it's just the angle of the photo, those sure look parallel to me.

Still a nice car.

The bolts are parallel so I will have to go to the casting numbers. I thought just the F/I engines had the hold down screws closer together than the bottom screws this is a 230hp w/auto.
The ballast resistor and the copper choke tube will be replaced.
Thank you
