Am I missing something here?
It costs huge (tax) money to fly a F-18. Sure this is a great recruiting tool for the Navy, but to do 2 runs to see who is faster plus a ride for the writer seems like wasted $$.

All it cost was fuel - everything else is fixed costs they'd have if they didn't fly at all that day.

Don't forget for every filght hour there is wear to the equipment and requiste amount of maintenance. These costs are not insignificant and those resources could have been used to support our troops in Iraq and Afganistan.

I think you are forgetting that the Blue Angels were created to help sell kids to go into the Navy. And it works!
This is just great advertising (and fun for us to dream).
Only thing I did not like was the damn H*nda commercial at the beginning. Should of been a Corvette commercial!

I worked on the Norfolk Navy Base flight line for 3 years and these guys used to practice on weekdays for the weekend show every year. I got to see them REAL close up. Yes, the flights cost money as hours on the airframes and engines require scheduled maintenance. HOWever, its partially covered in recruitment costs and the pilots have to maintain their airtime hours anyway to maintain their flight status when they return to the fleet.
I should add that the skill of these pilots is nothing short of phenomenal...
I also got to see them in action on the Navy flight simulators I worked on at Oceana..they rock!

As for the pilot, if he didn’t log that flight hour drag racing a Corvette it would have been logged during another flight. Number 7 fly’s a set number of hours each week and 1-6 fly a complete show profile 6 days a week plus flights to and from each show site.
Trust me, been there done that and have the tee shirt.
