Big Block Guys: I need help Id'ing this block
The Bore is 4.25, the stroke is 4.0
The block casting # is 14015445 (80's truck)
The casting date? is *213* Feb. 13th, no year?
CFD (Chevrolet Foundry Division)
The pad doesn't look like it was ever stamped. I can't see the common swirl marks from being decked. This came out of a 80's Dually truck.
The pistons have a 10 on the dome, but measure 4.25.
Have you ever seem pistons like these?
Thanks, Zim

I think the tall deck was in the C65s and up.
If the price is right you could make a nice motor, about the only thing you'll be using off this one is the block and crank. There are some good oval port heads that flow really well, the 781 and 049 castings come to mind.
If you don't get too crazy you could end up with a good motor making decent power for not a lot of bucks. My brother had a very similar low buck oval port 468 in a Chevelle that ran 11.50s. JMO

The "10" denotes the piston sizing relative to the bore; even with a standard bore, the tolerance ranges for clearance in those days dictated about eight different piston sizes, depending on how the bores air-gaged, and it was stamped on the top of the pistons. The other 7 may or may not have different sizing stamps.

Thanks for the info guys, as always your experience is much appreciated.
I bought this engine for the shortblock, and plan on a rebuild for my 77 Blazer off road project, so torque is the main objective. I plan on a redline of 5500. The heads I got with it are peanuts, and he also give me a set of 136 large ovals, but I just located a set of 781's for 100$ on craigs list. I plan on picking those up tonight. I will use these pistons again, if there isn't anything wrong with them or the bores. The ridge in the cylinders are about enough to feel it with your finger, but not catch your nail on it. I will have my machinist check them for roundness, and taper though. I believe this is some kind of a replacement engine, as there is no id on the block for application, or assy date.
What does the block pad look like to you guys? Would there ever have been a scenario for leaving it blank?
