Side exhaust size...
For C2's, are the original side exhausts 2" for small blocks and 2 1/2" for big blocks? Do both sizes fit under the stock covers? Thanks...

The actual muffler section inside diameter for all original GM sidepipes (SB and BB) is 1-7/8"; the muffler section was the same for both applications.

I got mine from Sweet Thunder!

They have the 2.5" inner baffles, and that is what I put on. I did extensive research on putting this together.

So in 65 all side pipe cars had 2.5 inch exhaust regardless of motor (with the exception of the base motor which side pipes were not an option)? And then in 66/67 427's got 2.5 inch exhaust and 327's got 2 inch? Is that right?
Thanks,
Dave

Dave the 300 and 250 cars got 2" pipes in 65 if I recall correctly.

'66-'67 327's (except 300hp Powerglides) all had 2-1/2" exhaust systems, but the exhaust manifold outlets were all 2"; the 2-1/2" front exhaust pipes were swaged down to 2" just below the connection to the exhaust manifold. 300hp Powerglides were 2" all the way to the mufflers.

63-65 300hp w/manaul trans also had 2.5" exhausts. If you are going to install side exhaust, suggest you look into getting covers with the insulators installed. Covers are much cooler to legs.

I have 3" I.D. side pipes on my '66, they just barely fit under the stock covers, and people think I'm running open headers. My wife won't ride with me unless she has her earplugs in! www.classicchambered.com LOUD!!
Thanks,

Hi Blake, I'm running Stainless Works headers into the classic chambered side pipes. I also installed a crossover pipe right where the headers turn out and it's still loud. When I pull up to a red light in traffic, ALL heads turn around to see what the heck is causing all that racket. I LOVE it!

2.5" VettePacks (part chambered / part resonator) would be a LOT quieter than the 3" Powerstick sidepipe mufflers. The 3" mufflers are BRUTALLY LOUD - not for the faint-of-heart. They flow massive scfm's though.
I'm working on prototype 2-3/4" inner core mufflers for the Vette sidepipe crowd - that way I can build VettePacks suitable for the high HP big blocks that will provide plenty of flow with really good noise reduction. Right now I cannot do a 3" core muffler with a 3.5" body & fit packing material inside. I'll be able to do this with the 2-3/4" core mufflers. The max diameter that will fit under the sidepipe cover & frame clearance area is 3.5" OD.
Made in the USA.

According to Jere Stahl you can fit 3.5 inch pipe under a stock side cover and I am sure he is figuring that working with being used in connection with his side pipe headers.
I have 4 inch pipes with STS spirals and they needed to have a spacer to move the cover out.
Those real big exhaust pipes made in the same style as the original factory ones are extremely loud but unfortunately are real power robbers.
The STS baffles make less noise with more power (using 4 inch) although some people say for their taste the pitch of the sound is to high.
Each to their own
