54 Wiper Switch Rebuild
My wiper switch has a vacuum leak at the front hole where the **** button rod is inserted. I've taken the switch apart and its pretty simple. The switch operates properly, just the vacuum leak. What am I missing?

Greg I'm going to go out on a limb here but if your 54 switch is like my 62 switch, the switch is a controlled vacuum leak until you push the button.
If pushing the button makes the leak stop, then I think it's possibly working correctly - IF a 54 and 62 are similar.

Hi Jeff,
Boy the 54 switch sure sounds the same. The fluid squirts and the hissings stops when the button is pushed. Do you hear (hissing) your switch when the car is running?

Not really, my 62 has a solid lifter motor and a good exhaust note so I can't hear much else. But recently I did confirm with a vacuum pump, that my **** behaves as described - a vacuum leak until the button is pushed.

Thanks Jeff and Roy. I'll check the spring. Have a good day guys!

Yeah my '61 wiper switch had a little conical spring in it which I took great pains to tape to the switch when I had my dash apart. I promptly lost it. I took an ink pen spring and cut several coils off and its actually stronger and gives a more positive feel than the old one and works fine...
