Default Early 63 PCV system

On the early 63's there is a metal cup and rubber grommet that press's into the hole on the block by the distributor. The metal PCV tube pushes into it. I just bought a new metal cup and grommet and it doesn't fit very tight into the hole. With minimal pressure I can push it so it falls into the hole. Does this sound right? The late 63's just had a big rubber grommet with a big lip.

New one on me.

EDIT: Now I remember. At least some '63's had the steel cup. Maybe a lot of them.

I ran into this also. I ended up using the late rubber only gromet.

I have an original metal cup, fits nice and snug. It seems the size of the reproductionis wrong. Who did you buy it from? Maybe try another distributor?

I got it from Zip. I am going to try and widen the brim so it fits snug or use a little liquid steel on it. I really don't want to switch to the incorrect rubber grommet.

Cheers,

Bob

Default original

I have a both styles and the grommet seems to fit better but I plan to make one out of some hard fiber material and one of rubber and see if it is an improvement.

the originals use a long bolt to hold that metal cup in place, same bolt as holds the old draft tubes on, plus one on the bellhousing. I would see if your block has that threaded hole at the bottom and drill a hole in the cup, and use the bolt. I imagine all the blocks with that hole in back have the matching threaded hole at the bottom.

What??????? The cup does have a hole in the center of it. That is how it sucks the gases out of he crankcase. You can't plug it with a bolt. Perhaps you are thinking of something else??

Not on a '63 - the bolt (and the adapter) started in '64; '63's used a rubber grommet with a hole in it for the vent tube that ended up at the carb base.

Hi John, I was hoping you would see this post. All the manuals I have indicate that any cars built before May '63 used this steel cup and rubber washer type grommet. No???

The '63's used the grommet whether it had the cup or not. Kurmudgeon (or whatever it is) is talking about the '64/later inverted cup that has a hose nipple on it. Either would work on your engine but the grommet is what's correct for '63.

Well I guess rubber grommet it is. Don't know what Zip is taking about. Go look at their site. It specifically says pre May 63's used a metal insert with a washer like rubber grommet that fits into it. Good thing I bought both.

This is what I am referring to:

63E Crankcase Vent Tube Grommet

Reproduction crankcase vent tube grommet mounting into block on '63 Corvette. Features metal sleeve as used prior to 5/10/63.

Guys, what I'm talking about is the piece used on the 62 RPO 264 setup that is on my 62California car and was standard on lots of chevies thereafter, and corvettes. Even my 66 vent hose (metal) from the block hole to the underside of the aircleaner used the center bolt. There was a thread on this with pics not more than 3 weeks ago. Suppliers will sell it to you for 85$ or go to the junk yards and find one. Much more secure than a loose grommet. Merry xmass, you young wippersnappers.

Actually, that was RPO 242 in '61-'62 (mandatory in California in '62).

The OP is asking about what's correct for his '63, and that was the rubber grommet.

I'm not a '63 expert, but the new 5th edition JG makes no mention of any sleeve or metal insert - just the rubber grommet, as shown in the Assembly Manual.

However, the Assembly Manual shows a change dated 5/10/63 that cancelled retainer #3727693 and #3715628 grommet and replaced them with #3831671 grommet, so there was something different there prior to 5/10/63 (although it's not mentioned in the JG).

The '64 P & A book confirms the above listed retainer/grommet was replaced with 3831671 grommet.
