Default Muncie Rebuild Kit Question

I am looking to rebuild the Muncie 4 speed in my '66. Has anyone used a rebuild kit from a company called "Motive Gear" ? They market a complete rebuild kit (frt & rr bearings, needle bearings, synchro rings, etc.) all in one kit. Any feedback out there, I only wwant to pull this thing out one time !

Ray,
I've never heard of them, thus, no knowledge.
I've been doing my 4sp parts business with Larry Fischer of D and L Transmission for ~30yrs and have not found anyone finer to deal with. His rebuild kits are as good and as complete as they come.

If you should choose to call Larry, be sure to tell him that I referred you (he usually gives a little discount to people I refer). Also, if you need any help or have questions, let me know, or, bring the tranny over. I've been building 4spds (mainly Muncies for 40+yrs).

Oh ya, what's with the 57 symbol for the Mayflower boat???

Larry at Dand L, as Tom says is a great guy. I am local to him in NY and have dealt with him twice and he is as good as they come. Has a Vette too.

I just finished my rebuild of my Muncie and zip corvette was the only place I could find online that had a good selection of parts, gears included.

Hey Tom, thanks for the link, I will take you up on your advice as Larry's kits come supplied with the countershaft and are priced reasonably. I replaced the clutch release bearing a few weeks back and all was okay until I started hearing a different noise. I'm gonna replace the clutch and as long as that transmission is out.....

Merry Christmas to you and your family, thanks for hanging out with me a little this year.

Ray

p.s. The avatar photo ? You would recognize it as Tulsa's Miss Belvedere, all 4200 oxidated pounds of it !

Oh, I didn't realize that was the entombed 57 Plymouth from Tulsa. Too bad it turned out to be so bad.
Compared to Egyption mummys, it didn't do so well.

Have to agree with Tom. Very professional and he has the non Chinese gears. I hate to beat a horse to death on the issue, but go for the complete master rebuild kit and take a long look at any gears or synchro hubs that might need replacing. There is nothing worse than getting into a trans and finding out you are in need of something you forgot to order.

Motive Gear apparently just reboxes Transtar parts... I just bought the kit from Year One to get the "5 selective snap-rings" for the rear bearing. As it turns out, Year One gets their stuff from Motive Gear... who gets it from Transtar. The small parts kit is SP-297-50 or SP-297-50A (Transtar part #) and it does not include the 5 selective snap rings as advertised in Year One's catalog. After 6 emails and numerous photo's Year One finally acknowledged that their Transtar kit does not contain the 5 rings as advertised. So if you need the rings... good luck.

The sizes are .084, .087, .090, .093, .096.
The SP-297-50A contains a .080 and a .090.
I want my M21 to be "on the money" so I need a .093 which is no where to be found.

The GM Overhaul Manual calls for one of .087, .090, .093, .096.
but all 5 have GM parts numbers.

Edit: Also contacted Auto Gear in Syracuse... spoke to them... they do not provide the snap rings either. Same thing for D&L.

I agree with Tom, Larry is an excellent guy to deal with. I just received from him a full kit for a F**D cast iron T-10. The kit had SKF bearings in it. He had the forks and slides also, received it in one day.

Update on Auto Gear...

The first time I just called them up and they told me nix on the snap rings... the second time I used the "Ask George" thing on their web site... here is the response...

Hi, We don't have an .084 thickness, but Warner 4559A (.087), 4559B (.090), 4559C (.093) and 4559D (.097) can be used and are in stock. All are $.56 each. Thanks. George

The guy I spoke to on the phone said they have a $25 min order. But he wasn't very reliable on a first pass.
