Can anyone id this 3 spd transmission
I have a transmission out or so I am told a corvette (he couldn't remember what year). I have the casting numbers on it but am unable to confirm the type or application. It is listed in the "Corvette by the numbers bently manual" but I do not have it. Could someone on this forum please tell me if my tranny is correct for a corvette with a 3 spd.
the case numbers are: 3834197
I appears to ba a muncie 318 or 319 transmission by the 4 bolt cover.
Any help would be appreciated.

That main case was only used for the '64 Corvette Saginaw 3-speed; should also have a 3819113 tailhousing, 3849534 side cover, and 3741458 front bearing retainer. There should be a stamped date code on the rear machined face of the main case on the passenger side, stamped vertically between the upper and lower tailhousing-to-main case bolts.

So this was a saginaw trans? In pictures it looks like the muncie 318. The tail housing number is
3844357. I think the side cover matches your description though. Is this a good transmission? Is it a light or heavy duty transmission? Thanks

That tailhousing may be a passenger car application - it was never used in a Corvette. That year 3-speed was made both at Saginaw and at Muncie, but it was a Saginaw design; it was standard equipment in all '64 Corvettes. It was replaced in 1966 by the new Muncie-designed 3-speed with a synchronized 1st gear.

Colvin's pass car book also shows that main case # to be used in '64 pass, Chevelle and Chevy II w/o O/D.
I don't find the tail housing casting number. It may be pickup truck.
If it doesn't have the three shifter mounting holes cast on the tailhousing regardless of the casting number, it's not a Corvette three speed.
Even though the basic transmission was used behind large engines, it was also the base transmission for the '55 six cylinder. If you don't jerk the things around, they'll take a lot of power run through them but a six cylinder with a good clutch can take one out. So will fast 2-3 gear changes.
It's not heavy duty by any strecth.
