Default 327 head id

I have some 461 small valve 327 heads numbered 3782461 and underneath those numbers I find H 1864 - trying to find out what year and car these came from? thanks!

Your date indicates Aug. 18, 1964 and the 2461 heads were used on '61-66 higher horsepower optional engines (275+) in those years except for the 396 and 427's. In '65 it was used on all 327 cube engines (Info as taken from the Corvette Specifications Guide). Dave

The head was used for optional engines in, '63, '64, '65, 300HP and up. The date appears to be, Aug 18, '64, for a '65 Vette, or the 186th day of '64 and that would be for a '64 Vette, built in June. Someone else check the date for me, I could be wrong. Dennis

The casting date indicates 8/14/64. Not absolutely sure but because the year casting is 2 digit (Tonawanda Foundry) cannot have originally been installed on a SB Corvette.

The H 18 64 date code says those are Tonawanda-cast heads, which were never used on Corvettes; they'll be perfectly functional, but the un-machined ends of the heads will identify them as passenger/truck heads.

JohnZ, I'm surprised at the use of these heads. The Black Book and Noland Adams book shows them listed for use on '63-'65 Vette engines. How does the date seperate them from Vette use too passerger cars? Dennis

Dennis,
As John Z above pointed out, the year in the date code ends with TWO digits for the year----64. Heads, blocks, and other cast parts which have TWO digits for the year, such as 64, means it was cast at the Tonawanda(NY) plant. NOTHING cast at Tonawanda was installed on a Vette. Vette cast iron parts such as blocks, heads, etc, had only ONE digit for the year, such as a 4 for 1964 and they only came from the Flint plant. Also, the double hump symbol on each end of the head has a machined finish from the Flint plant, Tonawanda head symbols are not machined smooth.
The 461 heads (double hump symbol) were used on 62-65 pass cars with the 300hp/327 engines.
Hope this explains the difference for you.

Tom, Thanks for the education, its the little things such as this that can help in tight situations. It's somewhat uncomfortable too know that some sources of info need to be clarified one more level, yet you wouldn't know it. Dennis
