1960 VIN decode help!
Hello folks,
I have a friend who is trying to figure out the VIN for a '60. The VIN is 00867S104456. He is also trying to figure out where the original color code would be specified as well as the Engine type. He has looked at the Engine block and can only find these numbers: #V0i26ME The car is a 4 speed as well.
Can someone help him out?
Thanks,
Tab

The 4,456th 1960 corvette built
There were no trim tags until 1963, but if your friend is lucky they may find the original exterior color written in grease pencil in the bulkhead behind the passenger seat, or in the trunk separator that separates the trunk from the interior
Early 1960s didn't have a VIN stamped on them. Just an assembly date and usage code. I'm not an expert in 1960 models, but my reference data indicates no corvette usage code that matches your friend's engine numbers. So, likely just a passenger car block. Does he know what the cast number on the back of the block is? The casting date? At this point it's not a vette motor anyway.

Thanks for the info!! He's gonna be taking the engine out possibly next weekend but like you said, at this point it doesn't really matter if that #VOi26ME doesn't match anything regarding Vette's..
Thanks again,

I think that car would have had the vin stamped on the block. I think they started around Mid January, and that car would have been 3rd week of Feb.
Its only about 200 cars from mine.

Actually the earliest 1960 found with the VIN stamped on the pad is in the 1600 range. It is generally accepted that they started stamping the VIN into the pad roughly mid-December. With this in mind, your original engine would have definitely had the VIN stamped on the pad.

Thanks everybody... I'll let him know. To bad its not the original engine for him. How about the transmission, he said its a 4 speed which he also said that he thought it was an option for that year. Will the tranny be stamped with the VIN as well? I that a Muncie in those cars that far back or another vendor?
Thanks again,

Tab,
The original paint code on my 59 is a green grease crayon mark on the fiberglass division panel between the trunk and the soft top well. I recall 60 is there too. 61/62 is typically behind the passenger seat. Take off the cardboard panel, if installed, 4 screws, at the forward wall of the trunk. You may see a faint area of some writing. Carefully scrape off some paint with a quarter or something blunt. The code may be there if it wasn't removed by a PO or restorer.
Rich
59 & 60? trunk location:
61/62 location behind passenger seat: (HT means hardtop equipped)

The 'ME' engine suffix code is for a 1967 327, 2-bbl, 210HP, Powerglide-based engine out of a Camaro: http://www.nastyz28.com/gm-chevy-cod...s-suffix-6.php.
Not sure if this is what your friend has depending on the context of the number you provided but this is one possibility....
