Default Power steering fluid; which one?

Hello, All,
I cannot find an answer to my question in previous posts so I'll try to get one this way. I am restoring a '66 and I rebuilt the power steering pump and have new hoses in place. Now I am going to add fluid and I don't know which one to use. The shop manual says to use GM power steering fluid, or, if that is not available, trans fluid Type "A". The (original) cap on my pump says to use trans fluid Type "A"; it does not mention PS fluid. Any suggestions?
Thanks,
Jim

You can use either ATF Dexron or power steering fluid made by GM P/N 89020661. I believe the pump takes 2 quarts.

I would first try the GM Power Steering Fluid. Next choice would be DEXRON trans fluid. Type A trans fluid is available, but hard to find. Let me know if you need/want this info on where to buy. The DEXRON is better and has more/better detergents etc. It is also upward compatible, so it works where Type A was specified.

I use any brand red atf in systems that don't leak and atf-with-leak-preventatve in those that do leak (with plain red atf in them)

Red for G.M. and yellow for Ford, in the old days anyway.

The shop manual was written 45 years ago, and none of those fluids have been available for decades; use GM or any other current power steering fluid or Dexron ATF; they're all backward-compatible.

I think you should advertise for some new old stock. The changes in formula may cause you demerit points.... and we won't have anything to do with that.

Your really serious ???????????????
