Life after the Midyear - Track Photos
Hey Gang!
A few of you suggested that I post up some pics of what I get up to after moving on from the realm of Midyears and the NCRS - well, it's quite different...
I did a bunch of somewhat neglected maintenance and a few subtle upgrades to my 99 FRC daily driver, took a competion driver training course, got my senior SoloSprint licence (which allows me to do timed runs on closed road-race tracks and hill-climbs), and then did some not so subtle upgrades to the car - which allows it to do the timed runs on closed tracks, and then ran my first few events. What a total gas!
The local track is a tight, twisty, relatively low speed (max of ~110 mph) course with concrete walls on the exits of many of the corners. Add in the rain typical for the area and you've got a pretty exciting mix.
I need to do some more upgrades to the car - ram-air ducting to the front brakes to compliment the race pads I've got up there now - the hairpin at the end of the front stretch comes up very quickly. And it's only a matter of time before I get a set of R-Comps - I already have the second set of wheels...
New sticky tires on Z06 rims
Grid for one of the training sessions
My paddock mate during training - he's fast
Main hoop footing
Rear stays onto the frame
Almost there
Rear glass out to make the welds and paint
And now it's a race car...
All decked out and through Tech, ready to rock...
Toss in a downpour and some hail
Nearing the apex of 9 - the fast sweeper
Coming out of 9 onto the front stretch - the wall gets pretty close here...
Me and my Instructor from Training at the second event - he's a super guy
Paddock scene - the second event was much busier
Coming into corner 2 - still pretty slippery
The front stretch, where the really serious braking happens...
One happy camper
Next event, the Knox Mountain Hill Climb in Kelowna BC...

I guess I just don't understand your post. A C5Z is just another depreciating car. A C2 racecar is an appreciating asset! Why not have both? BTW a C5Z (an excellent car) will never be invited to Monterey.

Darguy,
to you for following through on your plans. I'm glad you decided to track the 99 FRC instead of turning your numbers matching 64 into a road racer. The price of entry is much lower with the 99, the risk to your investment almost non-existent since the 99 was going to depreciate anyway.
ENJOY the ride, and please check in from time to time to let us know how things are going.

Thanks for the feedback Guys!
It's been really fun - the next event is an out-of-towner where you race up the side of a mountain against the clock. Kinda like the Duffy Lake Loop runs I used to do in the '64 - except without traffic and where speeding is required. I'll let you know how that goes...
Looking at that beautiful Ford Daytona reminded me of all the Grand Sports I've seen here on the Forum. Same deal, different platform. Full on race car that can win shows. As I don't have room for more than one car, I figured I was better off with the C5. If you add in every dime I've spent on the car since I bought it 2 years ago, and all the safety gear - I'm probably into it for $25k. The Dude in the Daytona had 1600 hours and $50k into that build - and he started with the race engine from his previous car. He had 1000 miles on it at the beginning of the day. Here's what it looked like at the end of the day...
Too much throttle in the rain coming out of 9 onto the front stretch...
On a happier note, it does rain a lot here - but it practically never snows, and when it is sunny it looks like this...
Views from my apartment window
That view could have paid for a Grand Sport, and just might one day when I sell the place...
