What is the best lube for a Muncie M-22 transmission? Any special additives suggested?

No way, use synthetic in a Muncie trans. It Is too slippery for the syncros. If you shift fast, it will grind. Once the in there, it is hard to get all the way out. I race a m22w.
Use good old 80-90 wt.

That's what they were designed for and what I have always used. NO need to get fancy here.

trans lube
On a related note-- I hate to admit this, but maybe it will save somebody else the aggravation.
Ever since I built my 63, and had rebuilt the Muncie, I had a nagging trans leak when I parked the car for any length of time. When I would get underneath it with the squeeze bottle of 90 wt gear lube, I would put in a BUNCH- pull the bottle back and plug the fill hole with my thumb to keep the overflow from coming out, then plug it. Uhhh dumb move.... Since there is no front seal, when I overfilled it, which, on reflection I knew better than to do,and then drove the car, the slinger pumped it out the front bearing retainer bottom hole and into the bell housing where it leaked out onto the ground. I guess you have to be smarter than the equipment. Also, it is a good idea to coat the bearing retainer bolts with some type of adhesive thread sealant, as they are exposed to gear lube on the front, and can allow lube to siphon through the threads and out the front.
Oh yeah- and also be aware that 63 is a year unto itself as far as front bearing retainer diameter - 4 1/4 as opposed to 4 11/16 for all other years. If any of you are using a bell housing other than the 421 with the 63 trans, your trans is living on borrowed time. Ask me why I know this.

Melting Slicks
This is what you want to use. Napa is the only company that still sells the reg (non-syn) GL-4. The GL-5 has chemicals in it which may cause increased syncro (yellow metal) wear. Don't panic & change out your GL-5, just be aware next time you plan on refilling it. The Redline MT-90 is a good product & I've been using it for several years. It is also a GL-4 (not a GL-5)

I agree with claysmoker and 71-coupe on the MT-90.
From the Red Line site:
"Since most GL-5 gear oils for differentials are too slippery for manual transmissions, Red Line offers these products that ensure proper shifting while providing ultimate wear protection"

Any gear lube that gets into the back of the front bearing retainer should drain back through the cast groove, through the drain hole in the front of the case, back into the main case.

Unless you massively overfill it like I did. In which case it will run out alongside the input shaft until it dumps out the hole in the front bearing retainer.

Redline's Recommendation for the Richmond 5 Speed
This is the reply I got from Redline when asked what they recommended for the Richmond 5 Speed.
MTL is a 70-80w Synthetic.
Mike,
Thank you for contacting Red Line Oil, in your Richmond transmission I would recommend the MTL for street use. The 75W90NS is our GL-5 manual transmission gear oil and our recommendation for race use.
Regards, Dave
