Default Fan blade and spacer on a 62

I have replaced radiator, water pump, thermostat, clutch fan, insulated the shroud and still hit 210 to 220 while at stop lights on a hot day. I do not want to change the original look but I think it is time for a non clutch fan. Any suggestions on size number of blades and size of spacer on a 62.

Roger, I have this same problem.

I went with
1) 7 blade fan from Jeg's, part number 400-1617P
http://www.jegs.com/webapp/wcs/store...Term=400-1617P

2) 2" spacer, part number 555-51191
http://www.jegs.com/webapp/wcs/store...Term=555-51191

Although this fan and a different spacer helped another forum member, it didn't change a thing on my 62. 10 or so minutes after reaching 180, I'm at 210.

Put an IR gun on it before you do anything. Check the temp at the top and bottom hoses as well as the thermostat housing. May need the gauge recalibrated or replace the thermostat.

There's got to be something else, my 62 bone stock never goes past 180, even in todays 100 degree weather. Can you 'hear' the boiling in the system at that temp, it should be gurgling or hissing etc. at 220, even 210. Is your timing right on? Spark plugs burning good color? Gotta be something.....

Plugged exhaust or frozen heat riser valve, carb too lean,?

Yep, that's my mistake. I put a 7 blade GM fan on my 65 recently (factory A/C) so that it would look more correct. Got my car projects confused when thinking about blade count.

The links in question though, are exactly the parts I ordered for my 62.

I run this aftermarket 6 blade fan on the '61 with a spacer (no fan clutch) and all the supposed additional "roar" is non-existent. I can't tell any difference from stock.

It is quieter than the fan/clutch combo that I took off. The fan/clutch made an odd roar when the clutch would engage as the engine warmed up.

the fans are quieter if the blade arrangement is asymetric. notice that even the 6-blades are irregularly spaced

No gurgling, hissing or boiling over, just the constant temp climb at stop lights, It sure puts a damper on a enjoyable ride.

Have you verified the temp gauge reading with an I.R. gun so you know what the gauge is telling you?

What kind of radiator did you install?

Jeff,
Where did you get the 7 blade fan?
Thanks

If you go to the Flex-a-lite website they have a store locator so you can find a place near you. They also have online sites.

From a forum member, who was selling some of his spare parts.

It's a correct 68 passenger car fan, part number 3931002, which was listed as the service replacement fan for my 65 A/C car in later parts manuals.

I don't know if a 7 blade fan will really do anything for the cooling efficiency of the 65, I primarily wanted it to look a little more correct than it did with the old 5 blade CalCustom chrome-plated fan that had been spray-painted black.

But, in Houston in August with the A/C going and sitting in traffic, I want all the airflow I can get.

Sorry, thought you meant the flex fan. Might check e-you-know-who http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eB...d=350365095550. I've got one on my car that was either off my Camaro or Gmc. Not sure on differences in bolt patterns.

First try removing the thermostat and drive it first. Did you replace the water pump with a stock pump and not a hot rod one.

Does your fan look like this?

I don't think air conditioning was an option in 62. You can get the clutch and fan a lot cheaper than that.

I do see that LIC is going to offer a reproduction of the 7 blade fan for the 65 with a/c. The website is saying due out this year.

I think 63 is the first year that the a/c option was offered.

And to the OP, sorry to hijack your thread. I also think you should verify the temps with an IR gun. You could also add a small external fan to the radiator to help bring the temps down. My 65 has one on it. It only runs when the ac is on and when the car is moving less than 30 miles a hour.
