[VIDEO] 1967 Shriner COPO L88 Corvette a No-Sale at Mecum
Like a bad penny, the 1967 L88 Shriner Corvette showed up today at the Mecum St. Charles auction where it was a no-sale at $80,000.
Two years ago, the Corvette appeared at Barrett-Jackson where it sold for $176,000. This was after the seller was called out in Dec 2005 for trying to sell the car as an original 1-20 L88 Corvette, complete with fake documentation.
The rub is that even now the catalog description contains a passage which names the original dealer/owner and then implies the L88 was dealer installed:
We know that is not true thanks to the original dealer/owners son GL Anderson who set the record straight in this original CF thread covering the eBay debacle.
I grabbed the video from today's auction and posted it along with a little more of the backstory:

the 1967 "L88" Shriner Corvette started its life in 1967 at a 327/300 4-speed, one of the original 13 COPO Corvettes that was part of the Tangier Shriner Corvette Patrol in Omaha, NE. Originally owned by Garwood Anderson of Anderson Chevrolet in Wahoo, NE., it was refinished in Polo White with a Red interior and dealer-upgraded to L88 specifications, including a 427/430 HP L88 engine with correct heads, intake and carburetor, M22 4-speed, J56 big brakes, special radiator, radio/heater delete, shoulder harnesses and side exhaust.

....even though it's not real, it's still a neat car and I'd love to own and drive it. I'd just own it for what it is regardless of it's past history. It's still a Corvette!!!

Agree. While this thing is "storied", it is still is an interesting car. Regardless of the goofy provenance, I would pay $100K for it. All in all, it is a pretty nice 427, notwithstanding the controversy.
